It goes back two thousand years. A slick jew fish monger named Hymie was looking for a way to increase sales at his deli. He advertised that meat came only from even-toed ungulates and since fish had fins and scales they were parve and not meat Since this was a generally accepted kosher tenet at the time the Christians swallowed hook, line and sinker.

Ultimately, Hymie rented a large tent and promoted a Friday night noshing where he served fried tubers and fish. Manischewitz was sold on the side for a shekel per mug. He one-upped further by adding a game named Bingo to the festivity. The Christians loved this game and so did Hymie; the tent took 20%.

Anyway, that is how it started and the Friday night fish fry continues as a tradition among the papist faithful. The only thing that is different is that they no longer sell Manischewitz and now the priest keeps the 20%.
        Come climb my mountains.

Makes about much sense as sticking fish on top of their heads.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

Well thank you for explaining that. I am curious as to why the public school system will only serve fish on Fridays during this season and the true Christians can't even pray.

I wonder what Father Thomas' take is on this one.

If the Lord leads you to it, he will get you through it.

Although not a mackerel snapper, I am giving up on tough hairy necks for Lent and shall content myself with young tender ones. The problem is that the crypts down here generally contain the elderly.

I may well be forced to come upstairs to eat.

                Re: Lent is for queers!

Hmm... Bobby-Joe, perhaps you could help Brother Lindh in his time of need? I know it's not Wiccan hunting season or anything, but isn't there a curfew of some sort for children under, oh, age 16 or something, under which if they are caught out after sunset they must be placed in a "holding cell" near the crypt while their parents are eventually notified at some point during that evening? No offense intended, of course, but even the most stringently raised, upright True Christian children may err, and it is best for all concerned that this tendency be caught as early as possible.

I see this an opportunity for Brother Lindh to perform a valuable public service in preventing juvenile delinquency by nipping it (so to speak) in the bud.

                    Re: Lent is for queers!

Sister JennyD, thank you so much for your concern! I know that Brother Lindh looks like a cathylick, albeit a fairly strange one. But in going back through some of his posts, I see that he has been, if not exactly befriended, tolerated by some of our True Christian™ brethren and at least one of our beloved Pastors, who are acquainted with his rather blighted history.

I believe that perhaps he uses the symbol of the inverted cross because a) his living quarters are in the crypt beneath our Sanctuary (as opposed to above, like ours, making him a "polar opposite"); b) he has a condition which precludes him from venturing out in the daytime and is actually a bit shy.

Considering those circumstances and judging from the subject matter and tone of his posts since he's been saved, I think his overall attitude towards his situation is remarkably sanguine.

                        Re: Lent is for queers!

Oh, yes, Sister Jenny, I'm somewhat familiar with that use of the inverted cross, having done some research into catholicism and other perversions of Christianity.

The cathylick tradition shown in the picture of their pope with an inverted cross on the back of his highchair is an old one, according to this article written by a Lutheran minister (as you probably know, Martin Luther was virulently anti-cathylick and anti-joo):

And here's a more general description of its history:

Brother Lindh himself is a refugee from the sad confines of the mooselimb "religion." He describes himself as a former cameltoe rider who somehow (I'm sorry, but I don't have time to look up the exact posts) was led to Jesus and then to Landover itself--praise! I know that his appearance and his ways are somewhat--er--unusual, but I believe that he means well. He is, overall, quite content with his present domestic arrangements in the crypt and meant only that he would be forced out by a lack of availability of proper sustenance, the specifics of which it is much too late for me to attempt to describe at the moment--heavens, look at the time! Yes, I must be getting to bed.

So please, Sister Jenny, consider just observing him and perhaps consulting with some of the others in our Godly congregation; if you should ever have the time, you could look up some of his past posts. He strikes me as quite sincere.

                        Thank you!
