First of all, technically humans are the memebers of the great apes (hominidae) family.

And we are not descended from the modern monkeys, though we share a common ancestor waaaaay back in the past.

By the same token, wouldn't monkeys have evolved into humans by now?

However, we also have modern monkeys because they occupied different ecological niches. They did not compete with the human ancestors.

For example, monkeys (and some apes) are much more adapted to arboreal life than human ancestors. Human ancestors, on the other hand were more adapted for low savanna territory - we have most probably evolved somewhere in middle Africa.
