Cardinal Avery Dulles, Theologian, Is Dead at 90

Cardinal Avery Dulles, a scion of diplomats and Presbyterians who converted to Roman Catholicism, rose to pre-eminence in Catholic theology and became the only American theologian ever appointed to the College of Cardinals, died today died Friday morning at Fordham University in the Bronx. He was 90. His death, at the Jesuit infirmary at the university, was confirmed by the New York Province of the Society of Jesus in Manhattan.

'Johnny Cakes' of 'Sopranos' Fame Commits Suicide at 47




(Dec. 26) - 'Sopranos' fans probably don't know the name John Costelloe, but the character he played had a huge impact.
The 47-year-old actor gained fame in 2006 during the show's sixth season when he was cast as short-order cook Jim "Johnny Cakes" Witowski opposite Joseph Gannascoli, who played gay mobster Vito Spatafore.

Police say the actor who portrayed the gay lover of a closeted mobster on "The Sopranos" died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in New York last week.
Police spokesman Lt. John Grimpel says Costelloe was found dead in an apparent suicide at his Brooklyn home on Dec. 18.
Police were called to his residence after family members were unable to reach him.


Costelloe's character was a short order cook at a diner in New Hampshire who gets involved in a brief romance with Vito, on the run from the mob after he was caught in a gay nightclub. After their affair, Vito heads back home where he is murdered in a hotel room.
The nickname 'Johnny Cakes' came from Vito's daily order at the diner.

Singer, Actress Eartha Kitt Dies


NEW YORK (Dec. 25) - Eartha Kitt, the sultry-voiced songstress, actress and dancer who went from the South Carolina cotton fields to international award-winning stardom, has died at the age of 81.


Kitt died on Thursday of colon cancer, according to family spokesman Andrew Freedman.
Known to the world as a self-proclaimed "sex kitten" famous for her catlike purr, Kitt was one of America's most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and nabbing a third nomination. She also was nominated for several Tonys and two Grammys.
Her career spanned six decades, from her start as a dancer with the famed Katherine Dunham troupe to cabarets and acting and singing on stage, in movies and on television. She persevered through an unhappy childhood as a mixed-race daughter of the South and made headlines in the 1960s for denouncing the Vietnam War during a visit to the White House.
Through the years, Kitt remained a picture of vitality and attracted fans less than half her age even as she neared 80.

Hubbard died at Sherman Oaks Hospital, said his manager, fellow trumpeter David Weiss of the New Jazz Composers Octet. He had been hospitalized since suffering the heart attack a day before Thanksgiving.
