He did it to stir up trouble so he could violate the constitution. Yes... He did violate the constitution in several ways. He was also owned by the railroad, which wanted access to the south.
Violations: He called state regiments into federal service. He used the federal government to interfere in state governments(You'll remember that states has absolute rights within the states. The federal government only had juristriction in matters of interstate commerce.) He took property without due process. He also had illegal troops perform illegal searches. There are a few other things, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. We have a government that's too big today because of him......
After all of that, he was working on a bill to get rid of all Negros(deporting) because he didn't like them. He was shot before he could complete that.
