This Sunday, I was driving through town when I noticed my young gardener Julio tending the lawn at a neighbor's villa. I felt like I'd been stabbed in the bosom! Julio has been loyal to me for the past three years, working 10 hours a day to maintain my eight flower gardens and four greenhouses, even when I couldn't afford to pay him minimum wage... I'll be honest, I'd always suspect he was a Catlick, but I didn't ask and he didn't tell, you know? And then I find him like this, working on the Sabbath.
Of course I fired him on the spot—or rather, I placed a call to a friend in Homeland Security who assured me they can drum up some terrorism charges and get him shipped to Gitmo within the week. THAT was a relief. I still wonder if I was too lenient. After all, we are commanded by God to kill any who work on the Sabbath...
Exodus 31:15
Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
...but He also tells us to obey stupid secular laws so that we ourselves aren't persecuted.
1st Peter 2:13-15
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
Did I do the right thing? Has anyone else had an experience like this?
P.S.
Here's a picture of Julio taken a few months back. He does have a shifty sort of look to him, come to think of it.
