Can drinking alcohol (Whisky) help with scripture reading?

I'm quite partial to various types of fermented beverages which have always been common in Christian countries, indeed mediaeval monks were famous for partaking of such liquids.

However, since I saw the light I had given up drinking completely, a difficult thing to do after many years on the wrong path. Nevertheless I managed it.

The other day, though, I was given a bottle of Bruachladdich Single Island Malt - a treasure in itself - and proceeded to have a wee 'hauf' whilst reading my KJV1611.

My discovery was that the Book of Genesis became far clearer, in my understanding of the will of God, that is, particularly the smiting bits. I also read through some of Numbers though things became a little fuzzier after the 8th dram (I've never been good with numbers).

Nevertheless, the inital part of the experience was uplifting. The morning after was downlifting in contrast but the thought occurred to me - is there a safe limit to alcohol ingestion + Scripture?

Or is it a sin? Or does it depend? I have the feeling it can't be an inherently bad thing if it's banned by islam.

Any help in my quest for guidance is much appreciated brethren.

I've still got a quarter bottle left and would like to know how best to use it.

    Thank you.

6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. -
    Proverbs 31:6-7

Before we can allow you to drink strong drink, we will have to confirm that you are miserable and in poverty. Our records say you're above the poverty line at the moment, but that's nothing that some tithing can't fix.

Will be arranged brother. My question is then, is partaking of alcohol as a help to spiritual understanding allowed at all?

Of course it is. Jesus was a partaker of spirits and even gave us the ultimate miracle of transmuting water into wine.

One can only imagine the complex flavors and subtleties in such a vintage.

Makes one wish one could have been at Cana to savour the greatest wine of all. I think then in moderation, my tippling can be an aid to understanding then brethren?

How would be a reasonable frequency of tippling? Do any of the rest of you tipple during it?

Personally I only drink wine, my husband is a wine and beer man.

From our understanding of the Bible, it is drunkeness that is frowned upon. So as long as your not drinking to the point of being silly or stumbling, you should be fine.

Well, I stopped while I could still read - I got a little over-enthusiastic with the Scripture. I don't intend to go overboard.

I wonder if some types of alcohol are holier than others in this sense?

I'm a firm believer in moderation in everything.

                Especially moderation.

In order to not become obsessed with moderation, and have it surpass your love for the LORD, you must go some days completely sober, and others completely drunk.

Moderation in Moderation is the key to not having something replace your Saviour.

While reading Scripture and enjoying a delightful glass of wine, Scotch, or even absinthe, I follow a single, simple rule:

                  Sip, don't gulp.

                  I hope this helps.

Surprisingly enopugh, Pastor once said the same to me after he mysteriously called me into his study at midnight after he, himself,
                    had been partaking....

Perhaps it was the wrong brand for me, or something; all I remember is the Bible and everything else getting fuzzy and Pastor assuring me that I might have some 'false memories' to sort out from the reality.

Why on earth would he want some sort of tubular device for cleaning underwear? Surely his maid has a washing machine?

I don't go for all those fancy drinks, I am a Bourbon man. I find that a couple of tumblers of Jack Daniels old #7 over ice and the Bible comes to life, Jesus speaks to me.

I'm a firm believer in moonshine myself. Since in fact Jesus made water into wine, thus I follow suit and make moonshine for myself.

Glen Bogle 35-year old malt is preferred among our little congregation for the fulfilment of the Lord's command:

Jeremiah 25:28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.

Personally I would recommend BOWMORE Legend - (an Island Single Malt from the Isle of Islay - far superior to the 12 and 15 year olds.)

Even the name sounds like giving worship to Him.
