If Your Child is a Gothic, Reform Through the Lord!

Greetings, readers. After stumbling across this thread, I have decided to correct the following controversial myths regarding goths. Yes, I am a goth myself, however I come not to scorn or argue with you, but rather to educate you, for ill manners are not needed here.

1-Frequently wears black clothing: Black is a shade; a color. How does it truly differ from any other colors you wear? Have none of you worn black shirts or slacks or skirts? Of course you have, it is simply because several goths have chosen this as their primary color that you find it abnormal. Mind you also that being gothic is not always about how you dress, it is solely an option that is up to the individual.
2-Wears band and/or rock t-shirts. Do they? If I am correct that is more of a low-popularity style among goths. As I said, the dressing preference is up to the individual alone. However, a band T-Shirt is harmless nonetheless, alot of younger folks wear them because of neat designs if not simply because they enjoy that specific band. However, this must not be directly associated as a gothic style.
3-Wears excessive black eye makeup, lipstick or nailpolish. When it comes down to cosmetics, I truly do not see anything pertaining to religion or personality. Many females have complexions that are simply more fit for darker makeup, more-so or maybe less. This should not be considered as a threat to religion.
4-Wears any odd, silver jewelry or symbols. Some of these include:
reversed crosses, pentagrams, pentacles, ankhs or various other
Satanic worshipping symbols. Symbols? The majority of symbols out there stand generally for what the wearer makes of them, usually nothing very direct unless maybe a Baphomet or inverted cross is present in the design, then it generally holds a Luciferian influence. However, pentagrams - if looked into - do not directly represent Paganism, rather the five elements (earth, air, water, fire, spirit) and are very harmless to wear. As are ankhs, no harm there, in fact they can technically be translated into a Christian or Judaic symbol; for they stand for eternal life after death, as you would be granted in Heaven. Silver, mind you, is just a form of metal; the type you probably wear on your own jewelry pieces. Ring, earring, and necklace designs are simply beautiful art and should not be a concern.
5-Shows an interest in piercings or tattoos. These are not Satanic or related to goths in any way. These are simply forms of body modification and are not as common with goths as one might assume.
6-Listens to gothic or any other anti-social genres of music. (Marilyn Manson) First of all, I must clear up the fact that Marilyn Manson is not gothic music, it is metal; which is a genre seperate from actual gothic music. Normally most goths hold a fondness for classical music, but they are not limited to any specific genre, it is only a matter of what the individual prefers. Rock music is not harmful, and here's a surprising fact - alot of the black metal bands you may be familiar with, who you would consider the worst of them all, often consist of devout Catholics. It is only the darker sound of their music that draws the narrow-minded to believe otherwise. Yes, they will sing of things from hell; of course to point out the terror of the dark side in their lyrics! Fans who listen to or read the lyrics of most of these songs realise this, however not all bands are the same, so you can only expect either or.
7-Associates with other people that dress, act or speak
eccentrically. I'm afraid that keeping your children in the shelter cage forever will not help them develope their character or life experience. They need to associate with people outside of their church youth groups, where will a narrow-mind get a person in the real world? Dead or in need of deep therapy most likely. It is the more eccentric folk that help to broaden a child's mind, aiding them to become great thinkers. This won't affect their faith choices, only they alone - even under your own sheltered roof - can decide whether or not they wish to take a different path; and if this time comes, you must let them go. You have shown them your faith, it is up to them whether they want to keep it or not, for you cannot restrain them forever. So, all in all, you can allow your child or teen freedom and still hold discipline, an even balance is best.
8-Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the
Bible, prayer, church or sports. These are juveniles we are talking about, you can't just associate goths with every little thing like this. This has absolutely and utterly nothing to do with goths, it is a personal choice that normal people make. Where is the connection here? Sounds more like depression, fatigue or simply loss of interest in old activities to me.
9-Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult,
witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan. Again, nothing to do with goths. Here we are talking philosophy and religious study, which in itself is not harmful. Goths are in no way associated with a specific religion, you speak of it as if it were a cult or something. There are plenty of Christian, Jew, Muslim, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Pagan goths alike. However, an important key aspect that goths do share is respect for one another despite race, gender, or religious belief. Goths will judge you solely by your heart, not your heritage.
10-Takes drugs. Completely unrelated to goths whatsoever.
11-Drinks alcohol.Also unrelated. Say, who in your family hasn't had a sip of wine or spirits at a holiday dinner lately? There's no law in the Bible forbidding Christians to drink.
12-Is suicidal and/or depressed. Right, well that's a personal mental problem, something that being goth is once again completely unrelated to.
13-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation.
(This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God.) Really? Last time I checked it was a sign of youths seeking unreceived attention. However, goths are not associated with this act; like depression, that is a personal problem.
14-Complains of boredom. Boredom? You mean the natural human reaction to idle activity or uninteresting events? That is a God-given emotion, just like anger or sadness, happiness or apathy. So therefore you are now blaming human nature on goths?
15-Sleeps too excessively or too little. Insomnia or fatigue, stress from school or social life, these are what cause irregular sleep patterns. We're not the boogie man or sand man, you know.
16-Is excessively awake during the night. See above for reference to Insomnia.
17-Dislikes sunlight or any other form of light. (This pertains to
vampires promoting the idea that His light is of no use.) I don't like sunlight because I have sensitive eyes and brows, plus I am generally not fond of the heat. Of course I don't think I'm a vampire though, I'm sure your children would have their own personal reason for disliking sunlight. Plus I enjoy the dark because it is relaxing to me, gives me more of a canvas to think on.
18-Demands an unusual amount of privacy. It is very common for youths, especially teens, to seek certain amounts of privacy, you know, time to think and rest from the hustle and bustle of the weekend. Modern psychology knows both introverted (reclusive) and extroverted (outgoing) personalities as equally normal. Nothing related to being goth, mind you. I am quite a recluse myself and I don't seem to be worshipping Satan or plotting my suicide.
19-Spends large amounts of time alone. Ah, yes, the introvert personality. Great thinkers come from great amounts of time spent alone in their room reading books and Wikipedia articles. Now, where do the goths come in again?
20-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your child
may speak to evil sprits through meditation.) This is the third question involving being an introvert, and this is the third time I must imply that goths are humans too and therefore can be introverts or extroverts.
21-Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an
adult. Can't a few friends have fun together without the parents assuming they're going to secretly meet up with Satan in their bedroom closet? This type of overprotectiveness only breaks friendships and social enjoyment, therefore causing the child to seek privacy from others and become depressed with deep feelings of shame and hopelessness within the bars of sheltering.
22-Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders
are but a few examples of this. I must imply that goths highly respect their elders as much as their families.
23-Misbehaves at school. Probably a behavioral problem that requires therapy, especially if the child is very young. This is normal behavior for many children. Otherwise, probably some ignorant teen trying to rebel against homework or school rules - something that goths generally look down upon.
24-Misbehaves at home. See above, same answer.
25-Eats goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of
this. I'm sorry, I laughed a little at this. Count Chocula has very unique tasting marshmallows, I've never tasted a better cereal to date. Well, back to the point, there is no such thing as goth food. We are a community of individuals, not a food coorporation.
26-Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires
believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very dangerous and
should be stopped immediately.) Well, young children possess an imagination. You know, the natural childhood trait that allows you to become anything you want such as the creatures from their bedtime stories or their favorite cartoon personas. These characters are not limited to vampires, of course. However, this is again not related to goths and has nothing to do with Satan or his so-called rituals.
27-Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources.
(Ask your local church for proper programs that your child may watch.) Ah, aside from Fox News and such. Wait, what do goths have to do with television? These questions are basically just addressing normal personality traits of youths.
28-Plays videos games that contains violence or are of a role-playing nature. Oh dear, not this question again. Goths do not harm innocents. And don't try bringing the Columbine Shooters into this because they were not gothic in the slightest. They were just imbeciles in trenchcoats weilding fancy firearms. School shootings are generally caried out by some provoked teenager who was bullied alot and Fox News just slaps the "Marilyn Manson Fan" stamp on them. However, goths do not care about criticism, therefore they don't become angry and seek revenge.
29-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the
computer. The internet is really not harmful to children outside of the netherbowels, and plus it contains no real connection to us horrible goth folk. I understand family time and bed time, but if the child has free time after homework and such he or she should be the judge of how they spend their free time.
30-Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music. Satanic symbols, well I already explained that aside from baphomet being present in designs there really are no symbols of Satanism or Luciferianism. As for the violent shaking of head to music concept, that is known as headbanging and is in no way related to religion; this is a harmless action. Also the rock-on sign is within the same lines, a harmless gesture to music.
31-Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner. Goths are generally not known for preforming this form of dance, simple as that. Unless you consider Arabic bellydance sexual, that is more of a beautiful art form when performed gracefully.
32-Expresses an interest in sex. So, how exactly did you conceive your children? You must have been goth I suppose.
33-Masturbates. Do not all post-adolescent youths try this? Goths can't take responsibility for natural human behavior, sorry about that.
34-Is homosexual and/or bisexual. A personal preferance, one in which I don't remember goths influencing or creating.
35-Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism,
Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism. Cults? I will have to say that aside from Scientology, none of these can be identified as a cult. By the way, Satanism does not consist of actually worshipping Satan, it is self-worship technically. Once again though, we are not tied to any specific religion.
36-Wears pins, stickers or anything else that contains these various
phrases: "I'm so gothic, I'm dead", "woe is me", "I'm a goth". I can promise you right now that anyone wearing those phrases or anything similar on their clothing is not a goth. Just another baby bat who doesn't really know what a goth is.
37-Claims to be a goth.Well, so it comes to an end. I hope that by taking into consideration everything above, you have learned that being a goth is completely harmless, won't affect your child's religion, and shouldn't affect your child's attitude negatively. My advice to all parents of children who wish to join the gothic society should not scorn them into changing, but rather educating them by explaining that goth is not about rebellion, acting violent, or drifting from their loved ones or religion; it is about judging people by their heartsrather than their outer being, as well as being strong-willed and holding respect for their elders.
