Even Jane Austin was fed up with this melodramatic nonsense when she penned a parody in the early 19th century. Gilbert and Sullivan lampooned it in 1887 with their comic opera Ruddigore.

I still fail to see how any of this is any different than a bunch of wigged out trekkies dressing up for a Star Trek convention.
