    FAIL.

    1) That verse says nothing against violence. What if you're a masochist?

    2) Please read this thread about "Who are our neighbors?"

That says nothing about violence. Love and violence can go together perfectly,

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Thank you again for exposing a minor to sexual content.

Also the who gets to decide emergencies well if there is a situation where a gun is present I can tell you right now who decides if it was for an emergency or not. COURT OF LAW

Also the reference to child holding hot coal and hitting wife why can't you just talk to them first.

    Eamples
tell the child not to touch it in the first place
Or not even let the child bear a place with coals

    And the wife part
Why not just talk to her before hitting her right away?

The problem comes when it's time to decide who gets to define "emergencies".

... And judging by your reputation, I don't think you're one to preach.
Who's preaching? I'm just trying to help inform you of the actual contents of the Bible.

Now, I think you've got a couple of things to do:

We know hitting is violence. What's the point of a punishment that isn't violent? God spells out over and over just how we are to punish servants and sinners and it's never gentle.

Deuteronomy 25:3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.

God's nothing if not thorough. Perhaps laws need an overhaul to be more like morals that come from God.

If a child wants to pick up hot coals and I smack his hand away is that violence? No, it is just showing that I care.

What if my foolish wife is heading to burn in hell and I correct with the rod? Surely that is showing that I care as well is it not?

    Proverbs 26:3
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.
