          Says who? Not Jesus.

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

THAT'S what Jesus had to say.

Re: two thing you haters should consider (non haters read this a

I've answered this before in another discussion.

Jesus was using a figure of speech. He meant that you love God so much more, that it's almost as if you hate those people. Let's look at the parallel verse in Matthew 10:37, where Jesus phrases it as, if you love such and such more than God, etc.

Matthew 10: 34-37"Don't think I've come to make life cozy. I've come to cut—make a sharp knife-cut between son and father, daughter and mother, bride and mother-in-law—cut through these cozy domestic arrangements and free you for God. Well-meaning family members can be your worst enemies. If you prefer father or mother over me, you don't deserve me. If you prefer son or daughter over me, you don't deserve me.

37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

In fact we know from other parts of scripture you are supposed to love your parents (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16, Ephesians 6:2, Proverbs 1:8, Proverbs 23:22, Malachi 4:6); wives (Ephesians 5:28, Ephesians 5:33, Colossians 3:19), children (Colossians 3:21), siblings (Leviticus 19:17, 1 John 3:15, 1 John 4:20-21), and yourself (Leviticus 19:17).

The only explanation would be that the Bible is contradicting itself.

I believe Jesus is capable of saying what he means, without needing for someone to "interpret" for him. I've never heard such a figure of speech. Have you ever used that "figure of speech", to say you hate someone to mean that you really love him or her, but less than you love someone else? If a man loves his kids more than he loves his wife, should he tell her he hates her, and would she know that he means he loves her?

Are you quoting from The Message? That's not a Bible. It's not even a good commentary.

Well then why is it in the parallel passage from Matthew, it's phrased "if you love your father, mother, etc. more than God..." Was Matthew wrong? Are all those passages that tell us to love those people wrong?

Are you quoting from The Message? That's not a Bible. It's not even a good commentary.
I included the KJV version of the passage, and the meaning is the same.

Are you suggesting than an atheist would waste his time posing as a Christian to try to turn people away from the Bible? That's ridiculous.

Those aren't "parallel passages". Matthew recored one sermon, and Luke recorded a different one. Read the whole chapters.

If you hate your family, then it follows that you don't them more than you love God.

You never answered my question about the use of that figure of speech. Have you ever told someone you hate them, meaning you love them, but less than you love someone else?

Try to answer this question, using The Message:

In Acts 8:36, the eunuch asks Peter what he needs to do before he can be baptized. What did Peter say in response?

A site like this that loudly proclaims the Word of God regularly attracts workers on iniquity trying to disrupt and subvert.

No, I've never used that figure of speech. But explain to me why in other parts of the Bible we are told to love those same people Jesus tells us to hate.

Yes, fair enough they are not identical. But in that particular verse they are saying the same thing, and anyway, I include both versions.

The word "love" means different things in different contexts. You can look at the Greek text and see for yourself that different Greek words were translated as love. In Matthew 10:37, the word used is φιλων (philon), which is a love in a personal or familiar sense. In Colossians 3:19, the word used is αγαπατε (agapete), which is love in a moral sense.

It is possible to love someone in a moral sense while hating them in a personal sense -- just ask my mother in law

I can't know your heart. I suppose it's possible to be saved yet completely misunderstand the Gospel, but much more often people like that are false converts who call themselves Christians but aren't really saved.
