Introduction & Question about "True Christian" understanding of multiple wives.

    Greetings

I don't attend any church. I don't have a favorite Bible verse, but I find this one kind of interesting (Jeremiah 15:6) and I have not found Jesus.

    Jeremiah 15:6
Thou hast forsaken me, saith the Lord, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.
    ---

I happened upon this forum by accident, I was looking for the scripture where if a woman is raped by a man, she must marry him because someone I know was asking me about it. And I turned up here, I thought the commentary was satirical and I found that idea to be humorous. However, as I read more about the forums I found the "READ THIS BEFORE YOU FLAME US!" thread.

What really fascinated me was how well versed in the Bible the forum participants were. Which may not be uncommon, but my experience in discussing religious topics has shown the opposite of that to be the case.

As such, I had no intentions of coming here to troll or flame the users of the forum, but to evoke serious discussion about certain biblical things and find out how they're viewed by people who consider the bible quite literally the only truth.

    ---

I wanted to know what the True Christian view on having more than one wife was? There are some scriptures that advocate a man should only have one wife (1 Timothy 3:2 though it is speaking about the traits of an Elder / Bishop) Deuteronomy 17:17.

However, there are many scriptures that give instruction on having more than one wife. Deuteronomy 21:15, Exodus 21:10.

Isaiah talks about 7 women will take hold of one man, and in consideration of Exodus 21:10 they will take care of their own provisions so long as that man will become their head (Ephesian 5:23).

There are many instances of righteous men in the bible that had more than one wife as well.

    ---

I know most religious people would say the bible does not contradict itself, and since there are certain versus that may be read in context that would seem contradictory, that's probably seen as interpreting it incorrectly. Also, I have never read the bible strictly in the sense that I would use it to govern my life, so I am wondering what the position on something like this would be to True Christians?

Re: Introduction & Question about "True Christian" understanding of multiple wives.

That introduction is better than most we get around here. It answers what we demand of newcomers, it is literate and polite. Thank you. It is possibly a little wordy though.
The guts of your post, I will leave to my more learned brethren to answer. We are not proponents of adultery here though and regard it as a sin.

However, I think God brought you here for a reason. It is more than that. Your avatar depicts a talking snake, just as in Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, “Yea, hath God said, ‘Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
I do not believe that this is mere coincidence, but a sign from above.

P.S. The verses you seek for your friends are Deuteronomy 22:28-29

Re: Introduction & Question about "True Christian" understanding of multiple wives.

Thank you for the reply. I found other introductory examples to be fairly rude. This is your forum and those are your requests of new users. As such I felt it necessary to follow them, since this is the only place I can create a thread.

The avatar was for a touch of irony in that as you quote, the serpent is subtle and crafty, whereas I tried to be as direct as possible. Also considering that my status is set as Unsaved Trash, its also a juxtaposition where my posts might be considered deceptive or blasphemous. Though it probably could be considered bad taste.

That said, I didn't come with the goal of seeking conversion, nor do I expect to make any attempt to deride any particular belief. I'm curious to gain a greater understanding of particular biblical concepts as they are believed by faithful followers of the bible in a strict sense.

I would agree that adultery is clearly outlined as a sin, but if a man had more than one wife, by the most base definition (assuming a vow of marriage to the second wife or more wives) would not be adultery. And I'm talking about wives simultaneously, not to have been married and get married again (Luke 16:18).

Re: Introduction & Question about "True Christian" understanding of multiple wives.

        Mr. Smith,

I also appreciate your honest approach. Of course, I'll be praying that you eventually see the Light that is Jesus.

As for wives. I can personally say that one is more than enough and I cannot imagine the situation where I'd be able to perform marital duties twice as frequently as at the moment. However, there are more vigorous husbands in the congregation so your question is relevant.

It is better to be prudent with one wife as you never know when you are called to serve your Lord. In a way, all True Christian™ men serve their Brethren. That is why the following verses are pivotal.

        1 Timothy 3:2
        A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

        1 Timothy 3:12
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

        Titus 1:6
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

Now, please, reconsider your position regarding the Love of Jesus!

        Yours in Christ,

        Elmer

I agree with Jim Farmer that this was a fine introduction!

I must respectfully disagree, however, with my brother Elmer's desire to see you eventually embrace Jesus.

"Eventually" is not soon enough! What if you get hit by a car tomorrow?

Accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior today!

Thank you for the responses Elmer and Faith_Machine, and also thank you for your kindness in regards to my soul, and to see me saved.

I personally agree with you Elmer, I do not think I have the fortitude (mental or physical) to properly fulfill my marital obligations if I had more than one wife.

Faith_Machine, My question is not meant with any presupposition, I have no stake in the outcome. I am merely asking out of curiosity as to what the true word in this matter is from scripture. I understand you follow the true scripture to the letter. I do not put any stock in mormonism (and I feel no need to capitalize the first letter here and give it any credence) and I'm glad to see that it is viewed as nonsense here.

              ---

On an unrelated note, I read through the Day 1 experience of your travel to France. I don't find your experience funny, but I appreciate the way you wrote it and some of the terminology you use made me giggle.

Now my hopes are a little bit lower. But the honesty IS appreciated. Some people come in here claiming to be Christian when they're obviously not. Come on, be open about what you stand for.

We are very willing to help you out in this friendly community, just keep in mind that it's the KJV 1611 Bible that's the arbiter of what is and what is not Christian. It's not stuff people invent themselves. That's a VERY important distinction.

That is what I have to say for now.

                Your Friend in Christ.

Be wary of false Kumbaya Christians who use a highlighter and scissors to read the Bible. God wants us to read the lines, not between the lines. False Christians will go to Hell:
                Matthew 7:22
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Asking a Christian to prove God exists is like asking him to prove his phone rings because yours doesn't. Make that call yourself! Dial 0800-get-on-your-knees-and-pray.

I think if God calls upon a man to have more than one wife, scripture might allow him to. But in most cases, keeping a handmaid who is not quite at the same status as his wife would be a Godlier solution.

For instance, if a man dies without sons, his brother must seed his widow to raise sons in the brother's name. In that way, the deceased brother's line continues. (Deuteronomy 25:5 and Matthew 22:24) Now the honourable man would always take his brother's widow and children under his roof to protect them and provide them with food and shelter. But he would not have conjugal relations with her, other than to seed her if she were childless. In that sense, she would be his wife.

Hello, dear friend. While the Bible has much to say on polygyny, the bottom line for True Christians™ in America is that the Bible repeatedly commands us to follow secular law (Romans 13:1-7, Titus 3:1, 1 Peter 2:13-16), which, in this country, forbids polygyny.
This church is dedicated to preaching True Christianity™ and the King James Bible exactly as they are, with no alterations to make them more politically correct for modern liberals. If you think that we've misquoted or twisted Scripture or quoted any verse out of context, please explain in detail how we've done so. Otherwise, if what you read on this site offends you, then you're offended by Almighty God and His Word, not by us.

                        Welcome, Potential Brother:

We are, indeed, told to follow the laws of the land, and in this country, you would not be permitted to publicly have more than one spouse unless your name is Cody and you are on a cable TV show along with your ugly wives and unsettlingly retarded children.

From a female perspective, I would just like to say that when you find a real woman to love you and take care of you as you should be, you'll not need another. I am yet unmarried but I know should I find time to marry someday, I would ensure that my spouse was well supplied with love, prayer, and lots of moist pie. I would be on my knees displaying my love (for Jesus) and assuming any position necessary to fulfill the Lord's commandments.

Sometimes the devil places these questions in our heads to confuse us. Such a life is not necessary. When you place your faith in the Holy Word of God (KJV1611), questions disappear and the Holy Spirit fills us with knowledge of how to handle everything.

If God says it, I believe it, and that settles it! He is so good to us all the time. And it doesn't matter if you believe in Him - He believes in you. Take one step toward the Lord, and He'll take two steps toward you. Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey. When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more, you'll be glad that you put your trust in Him. When the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

                        GLORY!

If you have a question, use the "search" function before posting it. Most likely it is being discussed somewhere on this Godly forum.
