Although I haven't lied to you about my intentions, I genuinely don't expect to be converted, I feel my belief in atheism is too deep-rooted.
It is however prudent of me to investigate though, as I said, if I'm wrong the penalty is very harsh. Of course if I'm right, I'll never get to say I told you so.
As for politics, I may be atheist but I'm all for strong government and strong governments have always been supported by strong religious ideals. I am aware of the contradiction inherent in that but let me explain.
Aside from who is right or wrong when it comes to creation, invariably all socitities and civilisations grew up alongside a religious belief. This indicates to me that regardless of whether or not there is a god (and all religions can't all be right), we as humans need or require spiritual guidance as well as government.
Anarchy is the least comfortable of types of governance, I'd imagine for most humans. We require or crave rules, religious as well as secular.
I would also argue that atheism is one of the hardest of all religious beliefs or lack thereof. We are deprived of the very simple comfort that all religions correctly or otherwise bring to their devotees. It doesn't sit well with our ego's or make death in any way attractive.
I genuinely envy anyone their faith.
