    Good evening

Well, I stumbled upon this site because of a link from somewhere else, and I must say that I am astounded by what I have found. I figured I'd say hi and maybe get to know some of y'all a bit better (yes I live in the southeastern US )

I go to Newspring Church in Anderson, SC, and it is fantastic. I know that the church and pastor get a lot of flak from Internet Christians for various things, but I haven't seen anything on here about them so hopefully we can get along.

I am a real Christian. I grew up in the church, but don't really consider myself to have been saved until I was 14. I was just talking to a friend in my room and something came up and I was convicted; I had not been living for Jesus up to that point. I had said the prayer at 5 or 7 or however old, but it meant nothing to me a that age and I was not living it. From that point the good Lord set me straight before I had much chance to go astray.

I'm currently a college student, hoping to graduate this May with a degree in Computer Science. I'm into cars and music, in that order. Not much else in the way of hobbies.

I guess that's about it, looking forward to hanging around!

        Hello Rob,

I looked up your church and I see that it is geared towards today's youth. I hope it isn't one of those hipster churches we've been hearing about. Okay, I'll admit it's a little to "youth based" for my taste.

So what version of the Bible does your pastor use? I searched but couldn't find it.

          Re: Good evening

Perry Nobles uses different versions and always explains the Greek or Hebrew meanings from the original manuscripts when it's necessary to. I don't think there's a single one he sticks to most, and I've heard him use all of the versions I know of except The Message.

I don't really have one specific favorite passage, I suppose it's all pretty good. One that comes to mind though is Romans 12:1-2, good stuff.

"Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer yourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God- this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is- his good, pleasing and perfect will."

This one is particularly special to me because, being a student at a major university, I am sick of the norm and acceptable behavior I see (especially the way young men treat women). I despise it, and want to distance myself from much of this behavior as much as possible. "Do not conform" is pretty much a life motto for me, and what better way to do that than by offering myself as a "living sacrifice"!
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

You are smart to want to distance yourself from women as they are almost all whores.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Respectfully, that is not what I said. I want to treat women in a Godly and respectful way (quite the opposite of what is typical around here), not isolate myself from them. I have many female friends, most of which are quite prude, as they should be.

Women have their place in the world. They cook, clean and have babies for Jesus. A good woman is worthy and uncommon as most females are filthy sluts.
A woman who knows her place gets my respect, a woman who talks back or misbehaves, gets my rod.

Ok, let me go through line by line so that may make a more informed decision should you want to. But first, understand that I am in no way any sort of official representation for Newspring. I am just a regular attender sharing my observations, nothing more.

"Get the church involved in social justice and creation care."
Newspring is definitely not involved in social justice. I have not heard the term "creation care" before, but from a quick Google search it seems to describe a Biblical "green" viewpoint; Newspring does not adopt any such agenda. I was afraid that they might be heading this direction when they introduced their new logo (you can see it on their website), but nothing of the sort has been mentioned in my time there.

"Show clips from R-rated Coen Brothers films (e.g., No Country for Old Men, Fargo) during services."
I haven't seen a clip from any movie during a service.

                  "Sponsor church outings to microbreweries."
Newspring does not believe that consumption of alcohol in and of itself is sinful, but they do maintain that it is sinful under many circumstances and they certainly do not promote alcohol consumption, much less sponsor trips to any production facility.

"Put a worship pastor onstage decked in clothes from American Apparel."
I couldn't tell you where exactly out pastors shop, but it is a bit "hip" in my opinion. You can dig deeper into their website and see some videos to explore this issue yourself as I am hardly qualified to talk about it.

                  "Be okay with cussing."
To this day I have not heard a cuss word out of any of their mouths, nor any mention of cussing at all.

"Print bulletins only on recycled cardstock."
The sermon outlines are definitely on cardstock. Not sure if it's recycled or not. But I have never been to a church that didn't print their bulletins on cardstock, and I grew up hardcore Presbyterian. I'm not sure how this is classified as "hipster".

"Use Helvetica fonts as much as possible."
They do use these. I see how it's "hip", but I don't see how it's a problem.

                  "Leverage technologies like Twitter."
The head pastor does have a blog, which is well-written and has helped me very much in my walk with Christ. I don't know if he's got a Twitter or not.

Well as a regular attender, you would have a better idea than I would from just the website.

"Get the church involved in social justice and creation care."

Yes, that logo is what worried me.

"Show clips from R-rated Coen Brothers films (e.g., No Country for Old Men, Fargo) during services."
I haven't seen a clip from any movie during a service.
                    Good to hear.

Exactly! Jesus drank wine. However drunkeness is frowned upon in the Bible.
See, it was the little things like this that started to worry me. Has a new pastor started at your church? Is he perhaps pushing hipster ideas as a way to move forward?

                    "Be okay with cussing."
To this day I have not heard a cuss word out of any of their mouths, nor any mention of cussing at all.

No we all print on cardstock, and I think if they use standard cardstock it's probably partially recycled. I think with the hipsters it's that 100% recycled, unbleached, and where you can see little flecks of whatever on them.

"Use Helvetica fonts as much as possible."
They do use these. I see how it's "hip", but I don't see how it's a problem.
Just a warning sign. That's why I asked if you had a new pastor.

                    "Leverage technologies like Twitter."
The head pastor does have a blog, which is well-written and has helped me very much in my walk with Christ. I don't know if he's got a Twitter or not.
Yes he does have a Twitter account (it's on his blog). Again, just one of the warning signs.

                      Re: Good evening

The church has been growing quite rapidly, and they are taking new staff and pastors fairly frequently. So I would assume that a fair amount of them are new. Also, I don't see how twitter is much different from an online forum.

I don't mean to cause trouble or "hatemonger" as Pastor Ezekiel has accused me of doing. Please explain to me how my comments are hateful and I will try to mend my ways.
