    Hiiiiiiiiii, nice to meet you!

    Hello!

Before you look at my username and think ill of me, hear me out first!

I was raised Catholic, and my church is/was Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Everett, Washington. Despite attending the church somewhat often in my early years, I was never baptized. Today, I do not associate myself with the church, although I occasionally attend due to my very religious family members. Oh, and since this is important to your forum, I do consider myself republican.

I don't have a favorite Bible verse. I do not enjoy the Bible because it's a very dry read, pardon my insolence. My favorite book is 1984 by George Orwell, though, and I have quite a few favorite lines from it.

I have not come "to find Jesus" yet in my life time. When I was a child, Jesus was forced upon me. I was too young to be a free thinker, so of course I accepted religion blindly. Today, I prefer to look to science for answers, although I'm still not opposed to religion entirely. That's part of the reason I'm here. Although I haven't "found Jesus" yet in my life, nor do I expect to, I always try to be open minded and I would like to know what extremists (not in a bad way, necessarily) have to say on a lot of issues.

Above all else, I'm here to learn and to broaden my horizons.

If this forum isn't open to people like me, however, just say the word and I shan't pay another visit.

Oh, so you're a former idol-worshiping Cathlyc that isn't sure that God exists? Open up your Bible!

    Psalm 14:1

    Psalm 19:1

    1 John 5:20

That's only a few. I'll let you digest that True Christian™ knowledge before I continue, you non-believer!

Re: Hiiiiiiiiii, nice to meet you!

Hi, Frank! Thanks for the little bit of reading there; that's probably the most I've read of the Bible in a long time, truthfully. Although, I don't find anything written in the Bible to have all that much substance. I could cite and preach about 1984 all day long but that doesn't mean I'm going to go around spiting Big Brother and telling people to worship the messiah Winston Smith. On the other hand, I do suppose that's why they call it "faith!" I promise I'll try to be alittle more open minded about that.

And, hellooo, Pastor Ezekiel. Glad to know you don't completely hate me, haha! Also, I've already read the threads in question. I try to not be a total idiot on forums, but forgive me for any glaring errors I might make as I've never joined a religious forum before.

Hm, see, there's the thing... I don't exactly know yet. At the moment, I'd like to think that my horizons are pretty broad. I'd like to think that I give equal thought to science and faith, but I think in hindsight I've always given science more credit than faith. In the gran scheme of things, I believe it's important to consider both. However, I'm willing to admit that I need a little push to try and understand and (maybe eventually) accept Christianity, and in reading a bit of your forum I believe that some influence from extremists (as I said earlier) may not necessarily be a bad thing.

Well thank goodness for that. Winston Smith, if I recall, was a character who not only had sex with whores, but also signed a pledge vowing to spread venereal disease to children if it would further his political cause. I suppose I should respect Orwell for crafting such a chilling villain, but quite frankly, Winston Smith's antics were a little to close to reality for me to enjoy the read; he reminded me too much of certain Democrats I work with.

Too late. Why would you pick a deliberately inflammatory username if you didn't want to incite righteous indignation?

I was raised Catholic, and my church is/was Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Everett, Washington. Despite attending the church somewhat often in my early years, I was never baptized.
                You sure about that?

Catholics baptize infants. No "very religious" Catholic family would skip baptizing their infant.

Oh, and since this is important to your forum, I do consider myself republican.
Why would that be important? You're not a Christian, so you're going to Hell even if you vote a straight Republican ticket.

I have not come "to find Jesus" yet in my life time. When I was a child, Jesus was forced upon me.
That was probably a priest. And wouldn't it have been Mary?

That's part of the reason I'm here. Although I haven't "found Jesus" yet in my life, nor do I expect to, I always try to be open minded and I would like to know what extremists (not in a bad way, necessarily) have to say on a lot of issues.
Ah, yes. Demonstrating your "open-mindedness" by calling us extremists. Well done.

Eeeeh, I see my attempts at a good first impression failed miserably! Sorry if I have offended any of my superiors.

If it's any consolation, I downloaded the Bible to my kindle this morning. Should I just go cover to cover, or do you think there are any particular places that I should read first? You all seem to have favorite verses, so I'm sure you have some advice on that...

I thought of this last night after I'd signed out that I forgot to mention a little bit more about why I'm here. In the last two or three years or so, some horrible tragedies have befallen me. I figured that whatever I'm doing in my life isn't working out too well and that I really ought to do something to turn things around... I kind of got to thinking that maybe I haven't been the best person, so less-than-good things are happening to me as a result of that. Do you think the badness in my life is a sign that I've been a bad person? If so, do you think it's too late for me, or can I be redeemed?

Re: Hiiiiiiiiii, nice to meet you!

Start with the "In" of Genesis 1:1, read until the "Amen" of Revelation 22:21 Do that a few times until you get to know what's in there.

After a while you will be able to "dip in" for advice on various topics. For an example, I was involved in a discussion yesterday about what to do about a friend's fat lazy son. I knew that the answer was contained in Deuteronomy 21:18-21 so there was no need to reread everything.

You will likely find though that reading it is an enjoyable experience anyway. I, like most people on this forum, just start again from Genesis as soon as I hit the end of Revelation.

Nope, Cover to cover of the mighty KJV is one wonderous read. TRust me, once you have read it once or twice, nothing will be the same.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

The only other alternative would be to really get in here and explore Landover Baptist. This is a really nice place and I'm a proud member. You need to focus on looking at what is going on right in front of you... -or- Everyone else is absolutely correct. You have to really, really get to know the literal truths of the bible. You have to get in there and get so right with the Lord, that you don't a single second of your day left over to burden yourself with. You just don't realize how lucky you are that the Lord found favor in you, and allowed you to communicate with us here at Landover Baptist. Thank God for Landover Baptist.
