  • Newb here

Hello, I have recently stumbled upon this site and have decided that it would be great for the mind and soul to engage in a little bit of religious discussion (it won't hurt to brush up on some scripture either).

My true name is Mark Cooper (I thought the username flowed well). I am a white male living in Lancaster PA and I go to the Lancaster Baptist Church, not surprisingly.

Some of my hobbies are fishing, hunting, and attending political rallies for grass-roots movements.

I have many bible quotes that I soulfully admire, but I like a quote from Deuteronomy 20:10-14 most : "You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that The Lord your God has given you."
To me, it symbolizes the attaining of wealth through showing others the true path of God. Whether tangible or spiritual wealth, it matters not.

    Thank you
Ecclesiastes 4:5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

You claim to be referencing Deuteronomy 20:10-14, but you only quote Deuteronomy 20:14, and even then you cut off a large part of it.

          Here it is without editing:

(Deuteronomy 20:14) "But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee."

So tell me: what is it about that verse that makes you yearn for Jesus' sweet, sweet embrace?

          Yours in Christ,

My apologies on that, I was going to include the offering of peace as well, but I narrowed it down and forgot to correct myself. And this is my favorite quote from the verse. I do not wish to debate, especially not regarding my choosing of a specific quote.

My apologies, didn't see your true question there. This quote allows me to realize the spiritual reward for showing others the truth. It means a lot to my life as I have spent much of my time attempting to spread the word to all in my community, and it has been very rewarding for me.

No worries, friend. It was a good verse.

If you ever run across websites and you find verses that inspire you, I would make sure to cross reference them in http://www.biblegateway.com/versions...ion-KJV-Bible/ to make sure they are quoting it accurately.

It's also the best way I have found to get yourself up to speed on God's Word.

You should also open the chapter instead of the specific verse. That way you get a look at the verses before and after it. It helps with context and deeper understanding of The Authorized Version.
Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.

                  Re: Newb here

I truly apologize for any ambiguity. I assure you my motives are pure, and I will note that the New Living Translation is not to be quoted. And I apologize for my misquote as well. The misquote was mine, not that of a website of such a name, a site that no sane man would rely on for a translation. To accuse me of this site for my translation is to accuse me of believing that a God-hating site would know His word best, and while I do not claim to be an expert on the scripture, I do not lack common sense. I misquoted it because I understand the meaning of the quote without having every single word committed to memory (many other translations I have read use spoils as well). Spoils and plunder mean the same thing, generally, so I must have confused the two when calling upon my memory of the quote, as I have read more than one translation. However, I wish not to argue semantics and hope to delve into actual religious discussion rather than accusatory remarks limited to this thread.

I don't understand. Deuteronomy 20 is not about "showing others the word".

It's about how to properly commit genocide. Killing off all the males of the entire civilization conquered, then taking all the females for our own uses. Making wives and slaves and concubines out of them, that is.

There's nothing about offering them a chance to convert. They just get the opportunity to become tributaries (subjects of) us.

You seem to have skipped right over Deuteronomy 20:13, what happens if they refuse to serve us.

13 And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

Not a peep about the joys of sharing the Gospel, friend.

                        Re: Newb here

Bert, any comments we make about using the KJV, or being careful to not omit anything are done with the best intentions, I promise you. It is my goal to get as many people as I can to read the Bible, the WHOLE Bible, because people leaving parts out here and there is what has lead to the craziness we have these days.

For instance, a lot of "christians" come to this site and announce that John 3:16 is their favorite verse. Hey, I like it too! But what they remember about John 3:16 and what it says can be two very different things.

People usually boil it down to: "God sent His Son to die for our sins!" and while that is technically true, let's take a look at the whole verse:

(John 3:16) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

What are the implications there? As I tell people, that excludes jews and muslims and buddhists and etc. etc.

They are going to Hell. Seriously. Because they don't believe in Jesus. It's as simple as that. I don't want them to go to Hell, so I ask them to give up their heathen ways and accept Jesus in to their lives.

Sure, they whine and moan that I am "interpreting" Scripture, but as Brother Levi says above, read the verses around it. Check out the next two after John 3:16:

(John 3:17-18) "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

That makes His intentions a little more clear, hmm?

And that's why we stress reading the WHOLE Bible and not just the parts that so-called "preachers" point out to you.

                        Yours in Christ,

Alright I realize I've made a mistake with my quote, but my true purpose here is to engage in constructive religious discussion. My pastor informed me of this quote recently and his interpretation of it so I looked it up to further examine different translations. I should've looked at the context as well as looked up a quote again before relying solely on memory. Part of my purpose here is to become a more devoted and intelligent Christian, which I feel I have not fulfilled yet. Can we please get off this topic and my mistake so I can focus on the other benefits of a community like this? My opportunity to discuss religioun with experts is upon me and I would like to take advantage of it in hopes of becoming a better Christian. Thank you.

You don't get it. This is not simply a matter of misquoting Scripture.

Don't rely on your pastor or your memory when it comes to the Word of God, because if you add or delete anything you're going to Hell.
