        OBERLIN —A holiday window display featuring a group of Nazi gingerbread men has left a bad taste in the mouth of an Oberlin store owner.

        Local artist Keith McGuckin, 50, of Wellington, designed the window display for Watson Hardware, saying he deliberately picked the taboo subject matter to delve into what gingerbread men do when nobody’s watching.

        But store owner Charlie Palmer said McGuckin — who has designed controversial window displays in the past — has gone too far, and he’s pulling the display.

        “He’s gone way overboard this time,” Palmer said. “A few of his other displays were on the edge, but never that crazy.”
        McGuckin said the design wasn’t intended to offend anybody. “I can differentiate between real Nazis and that the atrocities they performed compared to these little gingerbread men, but I guess some people can’t,” McGuckin said. “When I look at it, I don’t think about the Holocaust.”

        McGuckin put up the display on Friday, after Palmer had left. He said about 200 people showed up to take a look, and only one person complained.

        But Palmer decided to put a blanket over the gingerbread display after getting negative feedback from friends and customers.

        A separate, uncovered display features a suicidal snowman sitting in a salon chair under a hairdryer, trying to end it all after a former lover came out with a tell-all book.

        “I want people to say ‘Oh, my gosh,’ ” McGuckin said. “And once they look at it, say, ‘It is kind of pretty.’ ”

        McGuckin’s first installment of displays at the hardware store began last winter, with a “caroler bashing” snowman and a little boy excited about using his chemistry set to create crystal meth.

        A 2004 display depicting a suicide at the Special Effects video store in Wellington was taken down after a few townspeople and the mayor asked the store owner to remove it.

        Palmer hasn’t yet spoken with McGuckin about the display, but said he won’t allow the artist to use his storefront windows to display his work again.

        McGuckin intends to find another suitable window to show off his displays, and said it’s all about using “edgy” material to get people’s attention.

        “The lights and the shadows and the colors really make it a spectacular-looking piece of art,” he said. “Maybe I just find beauty in bizarre places.”
        Interestingly, The Secret Lives of Gingerbread Men is also a role-playing game, where you can find out in what other perverse activities your baked goods engage from time to time.
