Jordanian woman killed after giving birth to illegitimate child
A 25-year-old woman was shot dead while recovering in a Jordanian hospital after she gave birth to an illegitimate child by Caesarean section, a local newspaper reported yesterday. She was the third person to be killed in Jordan in an "honour crime" this week.
The unidentified victim was shot six times in different parts of her body yesterday, allegedly by her enraged cousin who surrendered to the authorities shortly after the incident, the English-language daily Jordan Times reported. The 36-year-old told the authorities that he killed the woman to "cleanse his family honour", the paper quoted a medical source as saying.
The victim reportedly had been involved with a married man for almost a year and became pregnant, the source added.
She was admitted to hospital on Monday. After hearing of her pregnancy, three of her cousins stormed into the hospital yesterday afternoon. One of them shot her at close range, while her baby was next to her, the source said.
Nine people have been killed in Amman this year in murder related to family honour. Jordan's penal code allows courts to pass light sentences on people convicted of involvement in so-called honour crimes.
