  • Freehold's Winter Heating Assistance Program

I read every year there are people who have trouble paying their energy bill in winter. Cities all over the country have "Heating Assistance Programs." I've never understood why people forget that in the winter it is cold. You would think they would remember from the previous winter.

Still, people around Freehold ask me if we are going to have a heating assistance program this winter. I've told staff to give my phone number to anyone needing assistance. When they call, I will advise them to put on a sweater. If they are still cold, put on a coat. My theory is that it takes discomfort to teach financial planning. Not to brag, so far as I know, I am the only Mayor in the U.S. offering to personally help citizens get through the winter.

Let the cold wind blow. We are ready in Freehold.
Isaiah 24:1-3 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty (2)...as the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. (3) The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken his word.

This is what is missing these days - common sense and good advice. Everyone is so caught up in the latest drama about transsexuals in bathroom, nobody wants to listen to plain sense.
If I have seen further, it is by standing on the heads of others.

Glory! For a second there I thought... socialism. But thank goodness no. Tell me where in the Bible it says you're entitled to heat. The Constitution doesn't say that either. People who work hard enough to be able to afford heating in the winter deserve to be warm. If you're lazy and can't afford it, you reap what you sow. Hopefully a winter spent shivering under ragged blankets in a 40 degree bedroom will encourage piety and thrift among the poor.
I was sinking deep in sin far from the peaceful shore,
      Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more;
But the Master of the Sea heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I!

The news today is that heating oil and natural gas prices are going to rise 20% across the country. We can be thankful God put us in the City of Freehold where we have a way to deal with these higher prices. I'm hearing there are a lot of cities that have no program to deal with this problem.

What problem, Mr. Mayor? This price is set by the invisible hand which makes it inviolable law. I like your advice to whining ninnies - if anyone is 20% colder then they can wear 20% more sweaters. If sweaters become 20% more expensive they should get 20% more jobs, or stop taking the drugs.

I think a hot rocks plan fits the bill here. A high up front cost could be paid for by a tax on the church but then, free heat for all. What's not to like?

Matthew25:1-13, the parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins, echoes your message, Mayor. God asks us - like that fine uniformed, God-fearing, paramilitary unit - The Boy Scouts of America - to "be prepared": God does not say "Call your local Welfare Office."

The parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins is the essence of Christianity and, when it comes to hard decisions, I often ask myself, "Would I rather be stuck on a desert Island with five wise or five foolish virgins?"

Another thought springs to mind - if, despite your advice, a few old folk and children die, it was only because God did not love them, so there is really no loss to society.

The plain and simple truth is poor people seem to think they can leverage their suffering for better treatment. I won't have any of it! The 99% can cry in my cornflakes, as they bring them to me in bed, before I'll give 1% more than the market demands. That is the price of their labor afterall. If they would make me feel better I would pay them more.

The market price is found only in capitalism and is a gift from God. When there is a surplus, the market price comes down. Shortage it goes up. When there is monopoly, like you doctors have, God's system tells you to set aside the market price and raise your price until the consumer's money is gone. It's not up to us to tamper with God's capitalism. We are only to follow it.

Mr. Mayor, it is our fiduciary duty as believers in the One Invisible Hand to pay minimum wage and fight for it to be decreased. Are the workers not holding in their poops to do them on our time? And stealing the toilet paper too? The Hand sees all and prices it in. That's why the Law of Supply vs Demand may appear not to work sometimes; it does, there's just an invisible component nobody can see.

It is never cold in Hell. Not even cool. Not pleasant. Not one bit.
Complaining is a sure fire way to get God's ire.

Buck up. Tolerate a little discomfort and be warm in the thought that Pastor Flint's 36 bedroom home is a constant 76 all winter long even when our beloved Pastor is away saving souls in St. Moritz.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Naturally, Mr. Hutchins. Can't have the corgis freezing to death, like mutts on the street.
