I find your passive-aggressive jab to be arrogant and condescending, neither of which bode well for you if you wish to fellowship with Christians. Where is your humility? Where are your manners? Were you raised in a barn? I know Canada lacks culture in general, but surely someone could have shown you enough decent social skills to learn how to get along in a church community.
Hello, my name is Mary. I hope to fellowship with you! That is, unless you don't listen to church authority (Deuteronomy 17:12); are a witch (Exodus 22:17); are a homosexual (Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:24-32); or fortuneteller (Leviticus 20:27) or a snotty kid who hits their dad (Exodus 21:15); or curses their parents (Proverbs 20:20; Leviticus 20:9); an adulterer (Leviticus 20:10); a non-Christian (Exodus 22:19; Deuteronomy 13:7-12; Deuteronomy 17:2-5;Romans 1:24-32); an atheist (2 Chronicles 15:12-13); or false prophet (Zechariah 13:3); from the town of one who worships another, false god (Deuteronomy 13:13-19); were a non-virgin bride (Deuteronomy 22:20-21); or blasphemer (Leviticus 24:10-16), as God calls for your execution and will no doubt send you to Hell, and I have no interest developing a friendship with the Spiritually Walking Dead.

I came across this forum when searching for sins to remind people of so they can fully repent before baptism. I appreciate the work done to search out and list many sins that we should beware of, and I would like to post a respectful and thoughtful reply.

I also was a bit taken aback by the term "unsaved trash." While it is true that God will eternally judge those who do not believe and reject the provision of His Son for their salvation, I would like to suggest that some people in the world have never even heard of the concept of sin or of their need for a savior. They have no idea that they are lost, but they may have a sense that something is wrong and things are just not adding up.

Our job is to be ministers of reconciliation and ambassadors of Christ in the world. I don't see that calling anyone derogatory names like "unsaved trash" is going to help this process. Imagine if you had never heard the gospel before and were never told that you needed to repent, and the first thing you heard was that you were trash. Would that make you want to listen to the next part?

The job of the Good Shepherd is to seek the lamb that is lost and bring it back. This job requires great sacrificial love and gentleness. Yes, there is a time for discipline of wayward sheep, but even that is done with love, and with the goal of restoration.

Considering the fact that some of these unsaved people may see this page, would it be a good idea to revise the language to show that we care about them and help them understand that they need to repent before judgement day?

      • Re: The 67 deadly sins of the New Testament.

Hello Mr. Engineer, and welcome to our friendly forums! You remind me of a story, dear. This is the story of a hunter who year after year kept bringing to market huge quantities of wild boar. Nobody could figure out how he did it. He never told his secret. Finally, on his deathbed, some of his friends asked him how he had done it.

"Well, it took a lot of planning," he began. "First, I set out troughs of food. The older hogs refuse to get near it at first, but the younger ones do come sniffing around, and they eventually start eating. I let them do this for about a month. Even the older boars start joining the younger ones at the trough. Then I build a fence behind the trough. This scares them at first, but they find it easier to eat here than forage for themselves, so they come back.

Then I build a second fence at a 90-degree angle to the back fence. That takes them a while to get used to, but they eventually do. Then comes the third side, and then the back side. There's a large gate in that final strip of fencing, and it's always wide open. It's on hinges. The hogs keep coming. After all, it's free food for one and all. When enough of them come in for their free food, I just shut the gate. The rest is easy."

This is precisely the strategy Satan employs to dupe simple-minded Seekers into thinking they've found Freedom™ and Truth™ when in fact all they've found is more grub to stuff into their self-centered bellies.

The free food is called "Liberal Christianity" But Satan is a clever hunter of souls. The short-sighted pigs, delighted with the convenience of food that doesn't require thought on their part, happily bring in for slaughter their own offspring. Pigs love their free slop, even when it isn't free. Warn them that the slop in the trough is a trap for their piglets, and you will hear a lot of outraged squealing. You will make a lot of enemies.

You don't have to be our enemy, friend. You don't have to serve Satan any more. You can walk away from the Trough and be Free! That slop you've been feeding on isn't nutrients, it's bait! Wipe your mouth clean and get up off your hands and knees! Read the Holy Bible and be Saved! Bible Believers know Tolerance is not Biblical.

        We can help!

          Mary,

I am all for repentance and warning against sin. As you point out, sin is deceptive, and the enemy does not show us his worst side at the beginning. Modern culture is gradually sliding down toward the abyss, and if it happens slow enough many are not alarmed.

Please do not take anything I say as tolerating or approving of sin, as the scripture is very clear what will happen to us if we keep on sinning. We should warn against sin, and we should live holy lives and manifest all the fruits of the Spirit.

          Galatians 5:22-23
          (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
          (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

What I was making an appeal for is using language that is respectful toward people made in the image of God that have an eternal soul and need our gospel message. All of us have sinned, and we all need grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness, and we want to come to the Shepherd that is calling us.

            Dear person,

Jesus Himself instructed us how to address sinners and vile, Hell-bound Unsaved persons!

Don't be silly. Jesus Almighty Himself didn't traipse around on tippy-toes worried that he might make the ignorant, foolish sinner cry because He wasn't honoring the sinner's Safe Space. Jesus didn't censor His words to placate the emotional fragility of the lost soul. Why, if this negro can understand, surely you can try to see it from the Bible's point of view:

Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance are indeed fruits of the Spirit. We know this because God has told us. But, also in Galatians, God explains about the works of the flesh which are adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like. Unsaved persons follow these because their lives are diametrically opposed to God's will.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Theirs is the realm of lewdness and filth. By rejecting God and particularly by disregarding His discipline and persisting in the sin they were born deserving to be tortured for, such people are like scum. Not an assessment of mine: God. calls them scum.
Ezekiel 24:6-13 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! Bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it. For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust; that it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great. Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned. Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed. She hath wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire. In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.

That concerns a single city. Imagine how much more revolted God must be to see a whole world dominated by sin. That is the world of the unsaved. Most of them don't even want to be saved. God uses other words too but we don't list all of them and "trash" is a catch-all most readers will be familiar with. Some people are even proud of it and wear hoodies like this:

                  Yours in Christ,

                  Elmer

                  Elmer,

Thanks very much for your reply. I think it's worth some careful consideration to look at who Jesus was speaking to and how he spoke to each type of person. From what I recall, He had the harshest words for the Pharisees and Sadducees. Actually you could almost say that John the Baptist started the trend.

(Matthew 3:7) But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

But it would almost seem that Jesus Himself actually enjoyed being with sinners. They called him a glutton and winebibber and a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

(Matthew 11:19) The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her children."

Did he tell people to repent? Of course he did! But I don't think he would have been called a friend of sinners if he were constantly calling them names and speaking down to them.

And how did he treat the woman caught in adultery?

(John 8:4) they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.

I feel from the comments being made on this forum that some of you might have been found in the group of people calling for her to be stoned, to give her what she actually deserved--fire and brimstone and judgment. But what did Jesus do? He wrote on the ground until they insisted on a response.

(John 8:7) So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first."

And then he went back to writing on the ground.

                  John 8:9-11

                  (9) Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

                  (10) When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?"

                  (11) She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more."

That looks to me more like grace than condemnation. He spoke very graciously to her and told her, "Repent! Don't sin anymore!"

And the woman at the well had had 5 husbands and was apparently living with someone else (John 4:5 - 29), but I don't read any harsh words of condemnation spoken to her. In fact, he spoke to her some of the most profound words in the gospel in language filled with grace and love.

So why was Jesus so hard on the Pharisees? Because the Pharisees were people that could see a miracle, and as a result of it go out and plot how to kill Him.

                  Matthew 12:13-14

                  (13) Then He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other.
                  (14) Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.

And because the Pharisees could say that he was casting out demons using demonic force.

(Matthew 12:24) Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons."

And because they asked for a sign when Jesus had already done many miracles.

(Matthew 12:38) Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

Because they taught children to not honor their parents:

                  Matthew 15:3-6
                  (3) But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
                  (4) For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
                  (5) But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
                  (6) And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

He specifically warned of the danger of being near and learning from them:

(Matthew 16:6) Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

I don't read any kind words to the scribes and Pharisees here:

(Matthew 23:13) But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Among other things, the Pharisees did not know about mercy and faith.

(Matthew 23:23) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

They looked good on the outside, but on the inside they were full of hypocrisy and sin.

                  Matthew 23:27-28
                  (27) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
                  (28) Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

They could not stand that Jesus chose to sit by sinners at meal times, the people they despised! They thought they were the righteous ones, and Jesus should have chosen to sit by them!!!

                  Mark 2:15-17
                  (15) And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
                  (16) And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
                  (17) When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The Pharisees and lawyers could not hear and obey God and did not humble themselves to be baptized by John.

(Luke 7:30) But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

They could not stand it that Jesus did so many miracles!

(John 11:47) Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

And in the end they were behind the arrest of Jesus to be crucified.

(John 18:3) Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

So Jesus reserved the harshest words for those that thought they had it all together and were better than everyone else, but were lacking in love and mercy.

But the heart of Jesus was to seek out and save the lost.

(Luke 19:10) For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

In fact, He will leave the ones that are already fine and go track down the one that is straying from the path.

                  Luke 15:4-7
                  (4) What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
                  (5) And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
                  (6) And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
                  (7) I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

So are you searching for those lost people that will repent and come to God?

Pharisees were sinners. We probably agree about that. You seem to imply that they were worse than your average everyday sinner who frequents our Malls and glory holes.

They were not. All sins are equally bad.

                    James 2:10
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

If you have the tiniest flicker of lust towards a woman (Matthew 5:28), it is as bad a sin as the Catholic underage rape. Or Genocide. God abhors both equally. In this context it makes no sense to treat sinners as a conglomeration of different subclasses but as equal in their condemnation (John 3:18). One of the best ways (Paul knew this) is public shaming.

                    1 Timothy 5:20
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

                    2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

In this manner, we are constantly searching for people to warn them of the consequences of their actions - and all their actions are evil until they accept Christ. These people are incapable of doing anything good. This means that we cannot judge an act based on its content but based on the actor.

                    Psalms 14:1
(To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

How to get through to them? Paul, once again knew the answer:

                    1 Timothy 5:20
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

They need to learn how to Fear God (Ecclesiastes 12:13). To avoid this:

                    Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Based on James 2:10 it is equally abominable to lie about a sinner's fate with "kind words" as it is to rape altar boys. That is why we need to rebuke the pharisees and the 9-year old who accidentally stumbles upon pictures of bras. We do this because we love the sinners and because they are incapable of getting their message through to God by themselves.

                    John 9:31
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

It's useless for a sinner to pray. God won't hear her. We are the exception.

                    1 John 3:9
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Hence, everyone is classified "unsaved trash". I was, when I joined this Forum, God's favorite. That is the default state that can with our help be transformed into eternal existence in Heaven where Jesus will personally feed us.

There are not many passages that talk about degrees of punishment, but I found one:

                      Luke 12:47-48
                      (47) And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
                      (48) But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

If you read the verse before the one you mentioned in Timothy, you see that Paul had just mentioned elders. Do you think possibly he is commanding public shaming of elders who are sinning?

                      1 Timothy 5:19-20
                      (19) Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
                      (20) Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

Jesus came to save us from sin.

(Matthew 1:21) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

With the Holy Spirit (God's Spirit) living in us, we now have the ability to reject sin.

(1 John 3:6) Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

So if an elder (who is supposed to be a leader and an example) is sinning, there is cause for public shaming. Do you advocate a public shaming for the 9 year old boy who accidentally stumbles upon pictures of bras? I have never seen that done, and I'm not sure if you would ever see that boy in church again if you do that to him.

Jesus did treat different sinners differently. Can you find me a passage where he spoke to other sinners the same way he spoke to the religious leaders of that day? There may be such an occurrence, but I can't think of one right now.

Do you treat teenagers who never heard the gospel (or even the 10 commandments) the same way you treat hardened criminals who have murdered and raped? And those the same way as religious leaders who think they have it all together but have no love in their hearts and are not examples of the believer in word and deed?

And can you tell me about any evangelism and outreach you do (like on the street)? Do people respond well to your message?

One more question, if I may. Do you mind explaining why you have 2 Kings 18:25 in your signature box?

                        ...
                        Darling engineer,

I do not refer lightly to any other version of the Bible except the KJV but here we unfortunately need to go to the Greek text. It is notoriously complex and the many textual variants diminish its value compared to the KJV, but sometimes (when educating the masses and you) it is necessary.

Let us look at 1 Timothy 5:20 in Greek
τοὺς (δὲ) ἁμαρτάνοντας ἐνώπιον πάντων ἔλεγχε, ἵνα καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ φόβον ἔχωσιν.

As you can see, the (δὲ) is in brackets. Why? Because no-one knows if it was there in the beginning. The WH has it, while, e.g., the Byz ς doesn't. Does it matter? It does. It is the particle that can be translated as "however". If the particle is there, it would be quite reasonable to understand 1 Timothy 5:20 as the continuation of 1 Timothy 5:19. In fact, quite a few commentaries, apparently those that you're familiar with, such as Cambridge Bible, tentatively suggest that this still deals with "elders", while, e.g., Jamieson-Fausset-Brown and Poole disagree and widen the scope to all sinners. Do you think that the (δὲ) is original and how does it influence your view about this matter?

                        No, let's go on.

                        1 Timothy 5:20, KJV
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

What about the last part of the verse? ... ἵνα καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ φόβον ἔχωσιν. This is crystal clear. No matter if the public reproof is targeted at "elders" or the common sinner, it is still necessary to make everyone fear God (Ecclesiastes 12:13), no matter if they're teenagers or demented old timers. Fear. Jesus may have treated the sinners in various manners during His short presence on earth, but when He returns, He's promised to subject them all to all the Tribulations: poisoning the seas, burning forests, poisoning their freshwater sources, causing war and famine, releasing poisonous animals to torture them and eventually first killing off one third of them with an army of angels and thereafter personally administering the smiting of all the rest with His personal sword.

To avoid that, we need to tell the masses that unless they discard their abominable ways, that is going to be their fate.
And can you tell me about any evangelism and outreach you do (like on the street)? Do people respond well to your message?
The response is what Jesus told us to expect.

                        Matthew 7:14
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Of course, lying about God loving everyone etc. would obviously attract more people, but in the long run lying will only lead them into Hell, which leads us to your final question...
One more question, if I may. Do you mind explaining why you have 2 Kings 18:25 in your signature box?
You may. Many people, including lots of false Christians and priests claim that they have the Word of God and preach to their congregation lies about the Bible. They boast that they know God's Will but disregard the totality of the Bible. In the end, this is only malice and blasphemy. Their fate will not be the nicest one.

                        Yours in Christ,
