So you never heard of metaphor? The word purulent is used to figuratively often to describe something that is as disgusting as something that is oozing pus. Literate, well-read, intelligent people know this.
If you think this is wrong, than look up the words "sick", "Rabid," or "pestilence". Sick means diseased - does that mean I can't call something this is gross, "sick"? Rabid means infected with rabies - is it wrong to call someone acting crazy "Rabid"? Pestilence refers to a plague of illness - can I call a very bad situation a pestilence?
