  • bats are birds!

Today an atheist told me that bats arent birds, this is just so ridiculous, bats are birds, why else can they fly? Even The Bible aprooves that bats are birds

    Leviticus 11:13-19.
And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,
    And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;
    Every raven after his kind;
And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,
And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,
And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

They dont lay eggs, but that doesnt mean they arent birds, there are other animals with fur who lay eggs as well, like the platypus for example, i guess that these atheists thinks that the platypus is a bird as well then, as it lays eggs.

    Re: bats are birds!

The defining traits of a mammal are hair and that they nurse their young with milk. It doesn't have anything to do with eggs. Reptiles lay eggs as well.

Bird's defining traits are feathers and wings.

I'm pretty sure that verse put bats in with birds because they both fly. I'm not sure what Leviticus would have thought of an ostrich....

Although I just googled it, and it seems like there is some disagreement on the translation of that passage. Some of them mention ostriches, though that seems to only be popular with recent translations.

Anyway, an atheist is going to go with the science definition, which is that anything with fur and milk is a mammal, and anything with wings and feathers is a bird.

That is why a platypus is a mammal, and a bat is a mammal, and an ostrich is a bird.

I don't think you understand, Pastor.

        Leviticus 11:13-19
And these you shall detest among the birds;a they shall not be eaten; they are detestable: the eagle,b the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 14the kite, the falcon of any kind, 15every raven of any kind, 16the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind, 17the little owl, the cormorant, the short-eared owl, 18the barn owl, the tawny owl, the carrion vulture, 19the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.

Is from the American Standard Bible. I was merely commenting on the inclusion of the ostrich in some versions of the Bible.

As to the rest, a question was asked, I explained the answer. Nowhere did I say anything hateful, or imply that a search engine was god - that is ridiculous. I was just using it to look up a verse, and saw that there were differing translations.

            Re: bats are birds!

The Creator defines what a bird is, if God says a bat is a bird then it is a bird. Science clearly has got its definition wrong.

Pastor Zeke, I just checked and it appears this Lanolin person has NOT followed your Godly Advice© and made a self-introduction.

I'm thinking this freak was overwhelmed by the logic of the True Christians® here and has decided to take the trolling elsewhere.

                    Re: bats are birds!

People who dont think bats are birds are really stupid, not only because God says that bats are birds, but also because it is so obvious that they are birds, i mean they can fly and have wings, and just like other birds, bats have their own characteristics, its true that a bat doesnt lay eggs yes, but thats just one of their characteristics, all birds have their own characteristics and so has bats, penguins cant fly, but still they are birds as well, do these stupid people who claims that bats arent birds also claim that penguins arent birds? Animals that lives in the sky and can fly, and also all animals with feathers, are birds(examples: ravens, eagles, penguins, bats and hawks), animals that lives in the sea is fish(examples: herrings, cods, pikes, whales, dolphins and salmons).
Yes i know that a wolf is a bird if God says so, but he doesnt, cause he made it so obvious for us which animals are birds and not, animals that can fly and walking animals with feathers ARE birds and thats it, it all makes sense to me.
Scientists are some of the most stupid people on earth, i mean they claim that bats arent birds and that whales arent fish, do they say that just to make people think that The Bible doesnt make sense or what?!

And for those who say that we cant classify birds that arent in The Bible as birds:
God gave us a information on a basic selection of animals that are birds in The Bible, as he knows that we arent stupid, he didnt need to list every single bird in the world which would take forever, he made it obvious for us which types of animals that are birds or not, which gives us Christians the authority so classify which non-Biblical animals that are birds or not, based on his selection of course.

Some pictures of differnt kinds of birds flying:

                        A raven:

                        A bat:

                        An eagle:

                        A hawk:

                        A crow:

                        An owl:

As you can see, all of these birds has different characteristics, including bats!

There are so many kinds of birds that scientists are unaware of. Do they know of the 4-legged creeping fowl as mentioned in Leviticus 11:20?

Bird come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are small and colorful (like a hummingbird) while some are big and black (crows); just because one particular bird has very fine dark feathers and webbing and a snoat doesn't mean it's not a bird - just a strange one.

Look at this dog. It may look like a panda but it isn't. Just like a bat looks like a mammal but it isn't.
