During the reign of the Catholic totalitarianists they actually denied the word of Christ to yearning Christians. That's historical fact. Christians were forbidden to own or read Bibles.
Only an authoritarian "father" (in Nazi terms, the Zelienleiter) was allowed to read from the Book, and even then he did it in a language unintelligible to the poor Christian souls hungering for God's Word. This maintained the cult's authority, and aided discipline during such efforts as the Catholic "Todeskrieg" against the Albigensians.
Incidentally, the True Christian Church is completely opposed to the kind of religious totalitarianism historically espoused by the Catholic cult. As noted in the Chalcedon Foundation's documents, Christians wish to bring all aspects of society -- law, communications, entertainment, education -- into conformance with Christ's teachings and God's law. And of course only True Christians understand God's Law, so we must be the arbitrators of all aspects of society.
That's completely different from theocratic totalitarianism. A whole different ball of wax.
