  • Latests Secular Science Lies: Crabs Feel Pain

Sweet Jesus sometimes I just have to get up and jump for joy. When I read the idiotic lies of secular scientists like THIS, Jesus turns over the honeypot in my soul and I jump up and shout GLORY!!

It seems that the same fools who claim that our grandparents were gorillas are now wringing their hands over how much pain a dumb sea cockroach feels when it gets tossed into a boiling pot of water. I'd like to suggest to these Godless pinheads that they start studying the Word of God to see how much pain THEY'RE going to feel when Jesus sends them down to the lake of fire for telling lies.

    Boiling Mad: Crabs Feel Pain

A favored method of preparing fresh crabs is to simply boil them alive. A longstanding related question: Do they feel pain?

Yes, researchers now say. Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate). The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans.

The study involved using wires to deliver shocks to the bellies of hermit crabs, which, being hermits, often take up residence in left-behind mollusc shells. The crabs that were shocked scampered out of their shells, "indicating that the experience is unpleasant for them," the scientists concluded; unshocked crabs stayed put.

Another test was run to see what would happen if a mild shock was delivered, one just below the threshold that would cause the crabs to leave home. These mildly shocked crabs, along with crabs that had not been shocked, were then offered a new home. The typical reaction: They'd go inspect the new shell. Significantly, those that had been shocked were more likely to pack up and move to the new residence compared to those that hadn't been shocked.

"There has been a long debate about whether crustaceans including crabs, prawns and lobsters feel pain," said study researcher Bob Elwood of Queen's University Belfast in the UK.

"We know from previous research that they can detect harmful stimuli and withdraw from the source of the stimuli but that could be a simple reflex without the inner 'feeling' of unpleasantness that we associate with pain," Elwood explained. "This research demonstrates that it is not a simple reflex but that crabs trade-off their need for a quality shell with the need to avoid the harmful stimulus."

The findings are detailed in the journal Animal Behaviour.

A Norwegian study in 2005 concluded lobsters react to boiling water or other pain stimuli, but that they don't have the emotional capacity to experience it as pain in the way higher animals do.

But a study by Elwood and colleagues in 2007 found prawns were irritated when their antennae were treated with acetic acid, and after a local anesthetic, they'd stop rubbing the antennae. He said this was evidence that they suffer pain, and that lobsters likely feel pain, too.

Elwood thinks its time for some crustacean empathy.

"Millions of crustacean are caught or reared in aquaculture for the food industry," he said. "There is no protection for these animals (with the possible exception of certain states in Australia) as the presumption is that they cannot experience pain. With vertebrates we are asked to err on the side of caution and I believe this is the approach to take with these crustaceans."

Maybe they feel better when I cover them in melted butter!

My grandfather was from Corvallis, Oregon, so I don't appreciate the casual misuse of the generational aspect of this story.

The main problem with the sound of lobsters dying is that you can't hear it because they're underwater. Who wants to pay for expensive microphones just to hear some bitchy crustacean?
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.

I assume if GOD intended for the crabs to feel pain, they do. Just as GOD put MAN on the top of the food chain. If a banana could talk, I'm sure it would complain about being eaten too!

A more fundamental question is: Who cares? God made animals to be helps meet for us, not the other way around, and we may do as we please with them:

Gen. 2:18-20: And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought [them] unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that [was] the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

Gen. 9:2: And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth [upon] the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.

God has even let us tame all of them:

James 3:7: For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

What's next, banning the eating of chicken eggs because chickens find the laying experience painful?

Maybe we should outlaw eating tomatoes, too . . . they scream for help!

A field test has now shown that making a tomato scream louder brings a horde of bug-hunting parasitic wasps to trash the tomato's attackers.

In the botanical version of "Help! They're eating me," plants release volatile chemicals when caterpillars bite their leaves. Creatures that prey on caterpillars home in on these distress signals. Like ambulance chasers, they rush to the scene.

The recent test demonstrated that spraying a plant hormone on a tomato crop to boost the distress signals pays off, says Jennifer S. Thaler of the University of California, Davis. "This SOS actually results in more herbivores being killed--that's new," she notes.

In a California field infested with beet armyworms, Thaler sprayed jasmonic acid on half the young tomato plants. That hormone, found in plants as diverse as ferns and cotton, triggers the manufacture of insect toxins and SOS signals.

Native parasitic wasps, Hyposoter exiguae, cruise the fields and inject eggs into armyworms. When the eggs hatch, larvae eat the armyworm from inside.
Now, if that's not intelligent design, I don't know what is!

Re: Latests Secular Science Lies: Crabs Feel Pain

I’m not sure if I can be bothered as to whether crabs feel pain or not. I dare say anything we eat feels pain including broccoli but The Lord has given it to us to eat and thus, it really doesn’t matter.

On the subject of crabs, few here will be old enough to remember late Pastor William B. Done and his famous fatal sermon on the abomination of crabs, etc. I was taken to the tragic event in the June of ‘47 by my father who was a personal friend of the Pastor.

It was a fine day and, by way of demonstration, the pastor had taken up position on the banks of the Freehold River some 200 yards south of The Old Bridge. Around him he had assembled perches for the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray, a pen with a few pigs, a wild goat, and a female pygarg (the first ever seen at Landover) and a tank with prawns, crabs and lobsters.

Pastor William B. Done then commenced his sermon and, having dominion over the ossifrage, took it and fed it a coney. The ossifrage bit the head off and womenfolk of nervous disposition fainted as children cheered. The message here is that a creature can be an abomination if it naturally eats other creatures that are unclean.

Pastor William B. Done now shot the pygarg with the Winchester he always carried and dressed it in full view, (more women fainted as the innards hit the ground) and sliced himself a choice cut and threw fresh meat to the crowd, as he rejoiced in God’s bounty.

Carried along on a wave of popularity, and I dare say, free meat, and with the crowd behind him he plunged his hand into the aforementioned tank and withdrew a crab of biblical proportions. This, he started to wave about. His famous last words echo even now within my inner ear, “And who amongst you would bring this creature to his mouth and partake…”

It was at this point that one of the mighty pincers of the crab fastened itself to his upper lip and the other to his eyebrow and the rest of his sermon was lost.

Screaming and running blindly, his hands clawing at the offending abomination, Pastor William B. Done fell into the river and was never seen again.

Ho hum… it was a great loss. The animals were divided up amongst the congregation and at his remembrance service (there being no body, there was no funeral service) Pastor Will Rawlings reminded everyone that they were free to eat whatever they chose. (Matthew 15:11)
