These people fail to realize that going 'South' is what appears to be a magnetic interpretation of the direction.
As you approach the edge of the firmament, it slowly (the compass) changes and the plane pilot, thinking his is going 'South' follows his compass, eventually flying around the circumference of the rough circle of the firmament.

Hold a magnet next to compass, see the needle move. Bring one on your next plane flight, see where you end up. Right where you started!

This reminds me of the Christmas my nephews bought their dad a compass for the car (he was a driver). It took a couple of weeks, but he finally noticed that according to the compass he was always driving due north. Seems that the compass always pointed to the engine.

But hey, I'm sure that my brother was wrong and he really was driving north all the time (even on return trips) after all, it's not like a scientific instrument could be wrong, could it

Also, if you have any common sense whatsoever, you will realize that it is absolutely impossible for some higher being to have created humans, the earth, animals, the sun, light, dark, and THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. It's not a matter of faith, it's a matter of logic. Logically, the entire earth has to be round. Look at other planets, they're round, not flat. Saturn has RINGS OF METEORS that must be kept in place (mostly) by some sort of force right? Well, that force is gravity combined with centrifugal force.

Let me break it down.

Gravity exerts x amount of force on and object, in order for that object to keep it's current distance from the source of gravity, it has to have a certain momentum to keep it's distance the same, which is where centrifugal force comes into play.

Learn these rules and formulas and maybe (probably not, but it was worth a shot to free one mind from ignorance) you'll figure out why a flat earth could never work, why gravity is real, and why your God is utter crap.

Also, as I happened to notice, my "title" in this group is "Unsaved Trash". I think that may be a little demeaning, I may be unsaved, but I am certainly not trash. I volunteer at local CHRISTIAN homeless shelters, SPCA, Food Banks, Food Not Bombs, and The Tap Project on a regular basis. I think that qualifies me as something a little better than trash, maybe if you could call me "Unsaved Leftover Take-out". You know, you might want to eat it later because it's still good, just a little old. In this case, I'm a good person, I just don't believe entirely what you believe. The morals are a wonderful to teach people, but the saving souls and the eternal damnation is a little dated for me. Why are humans so selfish to think that there is another life ahead of us? This life isn't good enough for you so you waste it preparing for one which may not even exist? And don't give me that "But what if it does exist? Don't you want to join us in Heaven?" spiel. I want a real answer, is this life not good enough to think that this *might* be the only one you will ever have? I am by no means trying to offend anyone, I've had this talk with many many Christians, who are fine upright people, and no one will give me a straight answer without quoting some off the wall, irrelevant scripture. Is this life not worth doing things that you wanted to do, but due to your beliefs, did not do? If this is the only life we have, I plan to do whatever it is that makes me happy.

I'm sorry for rambling twice now, it's 4am here and I can't sleep.

No, you mean centripetal. Centrifugal force means that objects are driven from the center as a result of circular motion. If you were correct, people would simply be flung out into space.

Yes, they are round and flat. Not spherical. Take a look at coasters for example, they are round too. And flat. Are you saying that only square objects can be flat?

Incorrect. The formulas relating to gravity only speak of the mass of the objects that attract each other, not their shapes. Otherwise a ball would be pulled more strongly to the earth than a coaster.

Thus, it is perfectly possible in your model for a flat surface with sufficient mass to exert gravitational pull on objects on its surface completely consistent with a spherical earth model.

Unfortunately, I don't even use drugs. I smoke cigarettes and watch friends do drugs, but I've never had a taste for them. I prefer to keep a clear head and be somewhat responsible. Sure, I do dumb things, like smoke cigarettes, but I guarantee you'll never see or hear of me taking some drug that a Dr. didn't give me. I'm much to busy for those luxuries. Plus, since the layoffs, I have to find a job immediately or I'll not be able to finish college next semester. Get to know me, then judge me. =]

Gravity is forces things to it's center from all angles, such as the Earth is my beliefs. If gravity pulls all things towards it's center then in no way could there be a truly flat earth, the center of gravity from where all things would converge would have to be surrounded by all the material drawn towards it. I don't know how to post a diagram on here that I drew up, it would help with my side of the argument. It's kind of like how in an explosion, all the force of the explosion is expelled outward from the charge itself, all of it is focused around one point, and then radiates outward. Well, think of gravity like an implosion, all of the force is traveling inwards, towards where the largest force of the gravity is focused. This is rambling. I'm going to bed now. Goodnight everyone. Good point, but you assume that core of the earth is flexible and able to fold/collapse in on itself. If that is so, then why are there mountains? Over the course of billions of years (your assumption, not mine), the earth would be a perfectly smooth surface.

But back to the formulas: it is perfectly possible for relatively minuscule objects like ourselves to experience the exact same gravitational pull on a spherical as on a planar surface.

So how do the formulas, by themselves, rule out a planar surface? They don't.
