There's observational evidence of it. In a galaxy, the gravitational mass is understood. From the motion of the gravity near its edge, we found that there was 400 times more estimated mass than was visible. Therefore, we believe there must be some non-visible form of matter which would provide enough of the mass and gravity to hold the cluster together. To sum up, the understanding of the motion of galaxies makes us, and me, understand the study of what we call dark matter.
