Oh, and according to NASA itself, you have to be in just the right place at just the right time or you'll miss it, oh and it goes too fast to be picked up with a telescope

Yes, because the earth is spherical with different rotations, therefore, the ISS will be in different locations at different times. Try using binoculars to see the ISS.

I think they messed up on that page though. They show the earth as flat, somebodies going to get fired over there for showing the real shape of the earth.

To explain the location of the ISS is an easier presentation. It's like the flat map of the world. It's easier and quicker to locate areas.
