1 dead, 5 wounded in shooting at religious retreat

(CNN) -- Detectives are trying to piece together what led to a shooting during a religious retreat that killed one person and wounded five others at a campground in Southern California.
The shooting was reported about 7:23 p.m. Tuesday (10:23 p.m. ET), near the city of Temecula, at a Korean group retreat, said Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez, public information officer for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
The suspect, a 69-year-old John Chong, was among those wounded and remained hospitalized Wednesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Two other people suffered gunshot wounds, and a woman, 58-year-old Chuneui Yun, died from her injuries.
Two others sustained injuries related to a struggle, authorities said. Those shot were in critical condition, Gutierrez said Tuesday night. Police had trouble getting information because of a language barrier, he said.
"There are some ladies here who appear to be nuns who are very distraught about what just occurred here," he said.
A handgun was recovered by authorities, Riverside Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela said Wednesday. Police were attempting to determine whether there was a relationship between the suspected gunman and the victims. Valenzuela said Tuesday night the victims were in different locations, "so it is a fairly big crime scene."
