Both Canaanite and Hebrew share the same linguistic root in the Semetic family. Variations on "El" appear in many of these languages. This is understandable, as the Bible (see Genesis) teaches us that the Semites and Canaanites were both descended from Noah's children; the Semites through Shem, Noah's son, and the Canaanites through Canaan, his grandson by Ham. Canaan is memorable as he was cursed by Noah to be a "servant of servants" to his uncle Shem.
