BRITNEY Spears has tripled the chances of her son Sean Preston becoming a smoker by allowing him to see her puffing away.
The singer has been dubbed ‘Puff Mama’ by US press after shocking photos showed her son playing with his mother’s cigarettes and lighter. Britney then took the pack from him and lit up, subjecting the toddler to second hand smoke.
Research at the Dartmouth Medical College in America has shown that in role-playing exercises, children from the age of just two were for times more likely to buy cigarettes if their parents smoked.
Children as young as four believe that the main reason grown-ups smoke is for pleasure and by the age of eight believe it is to copy friends and family members.
The good news is that if one parent quits, the risk of a child taking up smoking in their teens drops by a quarter and if both parents stub out the habit, it drops by 39 per cent.
