Stuff and nonsense Brother Monty! If your grand nephew doesn't have a pistol to play with by the age of 5 he will be firmly on the path toward sissification. I recall getting my first pistol from my uncle Donald "Rummy" Rumsfeld on my 4th birthday. It was an old Walther P-38, one that his father had taken off a dead wop in Italy during WW2. Oh how I loved to shoot that thing at the piccaninnie servants for target practice. Ah, memories.

Pfft. Projectile weapons are for pansies (aka sissy's) who can't stand to feel the blood of their opponent wash over their hand once the blade pierces through their viscera. Anyone can shoot someone from a distance you just have to point and move your finger. But to shank, disembowel, or just plain stab someone up close and personal where you can feel their breath, see the look in their eyes, and hear the splatter of their blood, now that takes some nerve.

The rule of thumb employed since the .22 gallery rifle was developed is that when the youngster is as tall as the rifle, he gets one of his own. Prior to that, it was determined by whether or not he could load, prime, cock, heft the weight and fire a muzzleloader accurately enough to 'bark' a squirrel.
