My grand nephew is graduating from kindergarten, and although his secular parents would have a fit, I'm considering getting him his first handgun. Five year old boys are prime targets for child predators and Catholic priests, and I want him to be able to defend himself. Is five too young for a first handgun? I don't want him to start first grade without some protection.

Stuff and nonsense Brother Monty! If your grand nephew doesn't have a pistol to play with by the age of 5 he will be firmly on the path toward sissification. I recall getting my first pistol from my uncle Donald "Rummy" Rumsfeld on my 4th birthday. It was an old Walther P-38, one that his father had taken off a dead wop in Italy during WW2. Unless the kid homeschools, or goes to a school on church property, if he is caught with a gun it will probably be confiscated.
