What does "dude" mean? Is it Christian?

I've seen it used in some different contexts. What does it mean?

The dictionary says this: noun a man who is much concerned with his dress and appearance

Are dudes homersexuals? Why do women get called dudes then?

Can True Christians™ use the word "dude"? If not, is there another word that means the same, but isn't anti-Christian?

I think 'dudes' are cowboys. I have heard of a 'Dude Ranch' on TV when I was a child though I have to say, it does sound very homersexeral. For some reason, I get an image of brawny naked sweaty men in excessively close proximity to one another.

Edit: Oh yeah, and they are all wearing hats. Cowboy hats.

I looked the word up, and it seems that it is primarily used by drug addicts, low-life heathens and other blasphemous non-believers. Surely nothing a True Christian™ would want to associate themselves with.

I was led to believe a dude was a camel's scrotum, and dudette was the female equivalent. Might possibly have it's roots in islam.

There has allways been something about that word that I didnt like.
I looked it up and it indeed has some really homosexual meaning and ring to it.

It was first used in the book "The Home and Farm manual" written bij Jonathan Periam. In that work, Periam used the term "dude" several times to denote an ill-bred and ignorant, but ostentatious, man from the city. Sounds exactly like gays but also every other type of unsaved man.
It seems "dude" is the term to use when talking about unsaved male trash. Dudette is the female equivalent.

No offense but about the duderanch but I think it is for gay cowboys who have seen that horrid movie Brokeback mountain.

Yeah I have returned. Been out with my old lady, meeting with some other friends, hanging out, and just having a good time.

Dude can have lots of meaning man. Take me, it is what my friends call me, a nickname. It can also be used in place of profanity man. Like when a close friend does or says something really uncool, its like DUDE!!.

Dude has a lot of meanings, just depends on the how its used man.

As for being homosexual; thats not cool man. I have happily cohabited with Betsy-Ann for many moons man, I am not homosexual as I don't have them desires man. The only one that really gets the fire going in my hemp shorts is Betsy-Ann, and sometimes her earth sister, but Bets is the only one for me.

I asked my brother about "dude" as he is much older than me and I thought he could shine some light onto the word.

I guess back in the 50's & 60's it was a word for a pansy, not necessarily homosexual, but definitely prissy and obsessed with clothing and effeminate.

I have however seen lots of young men using it lately, so I don't know if the word has changed, or if there's just a lot more pansies out there than I expected.
