I was very surprised with this article from Christian apologist William Lane Craig on the slaughter of the Canaanites. Although I do NOT agree with everything he says (he is not a strict creationist for example) he does fight for Jesus despite his limited mental facilities.

Deuteronomy 7:1 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2 And when the Lord thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:
William Lane Craig says
He quite rightly has no compassion for the adults who had to be slaughtered. He also has no compassion for the children and babies who were put to the sword (he believes that they would go to heaven, this does not seem Biblical to me. I assumed they would roast in Hell with their parents. Maybe someone could help me with this). He does feel for the Israelite soldiers who may have been distressed by the experience of slicing up live infants for God.
I was quite surprised by this as I'm sure that If I was around during those times I would have been swinging my sword with vigor as little arms and legs were flying through the air.
I would know that I was doing right because I was following orders. Orders from God Himself.

Craig knows that the slaughter was the right thing to do but would any real Christian feel brutalized for following God's orders? Surely not?

So whom does God wrong in commanding the destruction of the Canaanites? Not the Canaanite adults, for they were corrupt and deserving of judgement. Not the children, for they inherit eternal life. So who is wronged? Ironically, I think the most difficult part of this whole debate is the apparent wrong done to the Israeli soldiers themselves. Can you imagine what it would be like to have to break into some house and kill a terrified woman and her children? The brutalizing effect on these Israeli soldiers is disturbing.
