Many years ago, in a church in rural Mississippi, there was a roadhouse not far from our church out in the piney woods. It was well known for prostitution, drugs, liquor, gambling, and violence. Shootings, knifings and brawls were a common occurance. When the deacons and I went to the Sheriff to try to get the Hell-spawned place closed down, we found out that the Sheriff, his deputies, and the circuit judge were all cousins by blood or marriage with the owner. Our only recourse was prayer.
We prayed in a prayer chain around the clock for two weeks. Each member of the church would sign up to pray for at least one hour during the day or night, so that there was never a time that our supplication failed to ascend to heaven. This was beginning to take its toll on the members, since we were a fairly small church and had to double up some shifts. I was actually praying three or four hours myself, just to be sure we had full coverage, so to speak.
Imagine our relief, excitement, and revival when the place burned to the ground, about two weeks in! God heard our prayer! That Wednesday night prayer service, we all spent the evening in praise and thanks to God for His holy hand. Prayer really works.
Following the service (not a dry eye in the place), one of the deacons approached me with a wink and a nod. "Pastor, sometimes you need to put feet to your prayer." I never mentioned that to anyone from then until now.
I certainly hope that no one would try to put feet to these prayers. As Godly as they are, let's just keep praying and let God put feet to these.
