Just like if you believe in god you aren't necessarily a catholic.

You can't deny the existence of God without being an atheist. Nihilists are atheists, but not all atheists are nihilists. They're like squares and rectangles.

If you deny the existence of God you are an atheist. If you are unsure of the existence of god you are an agnostic. If you believe in the wrong god you are a heathen. If you believe in God but don't listen to everything he says you are a false christian. If you believe in God and follow the KJV Bible to the LETTER you are a True Christian™. Only one of these choices will let you escape an eternity of torment in Hell.

In order to define "agnostic" you first need to arrive at some sort of definition for "gnostic"

Is an agnostic someone who cannot know God, or someone whom God cannot know? (in your mind) or who lives in a world which God cannot Know?

Um, no. You cannot not believe in the existence of gods without being atheist.

An "atheist", by definition, is someone who does not believe in a god or gods. That is it. It does not mean someone who actively believes there are no gods; rather, it is someone who does not, by consideration of the available evidence, find that there is adequate evidence to support the existence of a god or gods. That'd be what you are.

Christians are theists. We believe in a god (in our case, THE God). Hindus are theists; they believe in a bunch of (false) gods. Deists are theists; they believe in a god of some undefined sort.

That's not a grey area of religion.

Agnostics are people who don't believe humans can know the nature of God. Gnostics believe humans can know the nature of God.

There are agnostic atheists. They don't believe we can know the nature of a god, if there is one, and they don't think the evidence indicates that one exists.

There are agnostic theists. They believe there is a god, but that we don't know that god's nature. Think Oprah or other New Agers.

There are gnostic theists. Christians are gnostic theists. We know God's nature from the Bible, and we know He exists.
