Re: READ THIS BEFORE YOU FLAME US!
It's doesn't matter: I'm not interested in "winning" a discussion by obscuring the truth. Rather the opposite: real progress can only be made by revealing the entire Truth, regardless of how we personally feel about it.
The war is expensive, that's a fact. But we did get rid of Saddam. And although Osama bin Laden hasn't been caught yet, there have been no major attacks on American soil anymore. And much of the money went to American companies, so it got pumped back into the American economy again.
What really hurt the American economy wasn't so much the war, but the housing crisis.
Sorry, but that's a strawman. If you're going to point out bad things about Americans as a group, then I can point out good things about Americans as a group.
It is fallacious to then point to individuals who do not represent Americans to try to disprove my claim. Unless the majority of Americans consider Charles Mansion their moral leader, it would be silly to consider him representative of American values.
If there's evil in the world, there's high probability that the ones fighting it will be Americans. That the ones bleeding financially for it will be Americans. The ones bleeding literally will be Americans.
Your claim is not relevant to the crux of the argument, so I have no interest in verifying whether you were there. I'll take it at face value. I've never been there myself, but I talk regularly to people who are and were.
Thus, in my view, my own interest goes a little further than the cavalier attitude you ascribe to Americans. War should never be taken lightly. Once you start, you have to finish it. That's pretty much the situation in Iraq: we won the war within a week or two.
So why are we "stuck" there? All military objectives have been reached years ago. Saddam is dead, etc. The reason we're there is because we want them to establish a free and thriving democracy. It's difficult for them because of their violent history, but we're still there -- no matter the cost. That is commitment to a case.
It is rare that you will see an American back down from something he started. Quitting is not an American value.
Considering Mr. Obama is our "president", I can only agree wholeheartedly with your statement.
Which OS? Linux? net/open/freeBSD? If Linux: yes, it's true that Linus Torvalds started on Linux while he was European, but which country is he in now......... ?
True, but nevertheless and opportunity afforded to him by America.
My wife makes my clothes. We try to be as self-sufficient as we can. We like it that way. It's possible some items in our house aren't American, I'd have to check.
I didn't say that there's 0 emigrating from the USA. People may emigrate for different reasons. You'd need to present more background data on this before I can comment.
