Because you believe they are real, if you start hearing voices, you'll believe they are the voices of your "gods" and "goddesses". If these voices then start telling you to harm yourself or others, why, they're the "gods" and "goddesses" saying these things, so they must be obeyed!

Whereas someone with no belief in "gods" and "goddesses" might realize that there is something wrong, and seek help from trained medical professionals.
