Proverbs 25-27
Proverbs 25
1 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
More Solomon proverbs, but these have a slightly different feel to them. There may have been some translation, or intent missing in some of them.
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
Atheists routinely ask something like "If god was real, why doesn't he just come down and show everyone?" Well, dear stupid atheists, God hides things for his glory. Think about how great his glory is, since he's completely hidden himself!
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
If you purify silver, it will be pure. The same can be said for a king and his country. If you remove the bad thing from anything, it will be better.
8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
I was watching UFC 103 on Saturday, and during Vitor Belfort/Rich Franklin fight, I was reminded of this verse. Here's a recap from the fight.
Franklin was doing fine, but then wanted to pick up the pace and entertain the crowd, when that happened, the person who remained patient, KTFO'd him!
12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
Correction to a smart person, is taken like a jewel.
16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
I can think of few things in the world that would be more nasty than puking up a stomach full of honey. Apparently, that was a problem back then.
I guess Proverbs 25:16 is the lesson for kids on halloween.
21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
Yay, heaping more hot coals on the enemy! One of the greatest tortures ever!
24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
You'll note that all the proverbs are for men to follow. You'll note that these proverbs talk about a bitchy wife. I haven't come across one yet that says the wives should abandon their husbands if they don't like them. There is no mention of a women's shelter. And why is that? Because a wife who gets hit is obviously in need of knowing her place.
28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Crazy people are like a run down house.
Proverbs 26
1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
I really wasn't aware that Israel had a snow in summer problem. Or a snow in any time of year problem for that matter. But snow in summer is a problem, as it means that there's been a freeze, and the crops are already planted which can lead to a famine if those plants are not mature enough to withstand the freeze. A fool getting honor is about as rare as a tornado in denver.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.
It seems everyone should wind up with the same amount of beatings in their life. If you get enough as a child, it will prevent you from being a fool and getting them when you are an adult.
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Do NOT answer a fool, or you might become one yourself.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
DO answer a fool, so he knows he's an idiot.
Many people claim that Proverbs 26: 4 & 5 are "biblical Contradictions" in 4 is says specifically "Answer not a fool" and 5 says "answer a fool". What does this mean? This is kind of like Moses blessing and a curse. 1. You need to let the fool know he's a fool. 2. You need to make sure you don't come off as a fool yourself. The best option is to just let that person know he's a dumbass, and don't get into a long drawn out argument with them.
11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.
Like verse 3 says, the best way to shut up a fool is to beat the crap out of him. Don't argue, do let him know he's an idiot... but just realize, that he's going to continue to be a fool, because that's what he is.
20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.
Remove the liar, and you remove the lies. Additionally, you could just spray him down with a Type 2 fire extinguisher.
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
A compliment is one thing, flattering means the person wants something, and it's probably not something you'd want to give away that easily.
Proverbs 27
This series of proverbs has a much different feel than even the previous 2.
2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
An open rebuke can actually accomplish something, whereas secret love will just eat away at you.
12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
I don't understand why the amish refuse vaccines.
20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
6+ billion people in this world, and there's more than enough room in hell for everyone that ever has or ever will live. Heaven is much more exclusive.
23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.
When was the last time you checked your 401k? Are you on track for your retirement? Or will you get to retirement age and hope that social security will be enough for you?
So what have we learned today?
1. Answer a fool, but do it quickly, if he keeps talking beat the crap out of him.
2. Check your retirement.
3. A man never deserves to have a bitchy wife. But then a wise man wouldn't marry a contentious woman anyway.

Little happened in the first 2:30 of the main event of UFC 103, with the packed house of 17,428 fans at the American Airlines Center starting to boo. Franklin reacted, wanting to pick up the pace to entertain the crowd, and Belfort responded by catching Franklin with a grazing punch. Franklin was a little stunned and Belfort then delivered a looping left hand that was the key blow, and after a few hard lefts on the ground, referee Yves Lavigne stopped the fight at 3:02.
