I was merely commenting on what I saw, and what I saw was Van Hellbound (lol, jk) condemning an entire religion based on her interpretation of the Scripture. Now I understand that one can come to the conclusion that Christianity sucks just by reading the Old Testament, but Jesus' teachings are, in general, totally contradictory to all that- it's agreed on by most theologists that Jesus preached peace. Shol'va, the fact is, have you read ALL the new testament? The jesus of the bible did not say all nice things. In fact, he said some very mean things. The nice things don't cancel out the mean things.
For instance, if Dubya Bush suddenly said 'I'm feeling generous, I want to give $10,000 to every poor family in America, but, I also want to drop nuclear weapons on Iraq', his giving the money to the poor would not cancel out nuking innocents in Iraq.

Two things I want to say about this. First: somebody isn't practicing what he's preaching up there *looks at Shol'va*. Second: you're condemning atheists' beliefs, which can be thought of as their own religion, whether they admit it or not. Why is it that Rachael can't condemn Christians when she has read their Holy text and has had personal experience with them, but you can do the same to atheists?

We accept that what we know about the universe is so miniscule that it is scarcely a drop in the ocean. We believe that the mysteries and complexities of the universe are infinitely greater than the unimaginative notions of religion. It is religious people who want and need to understand everything. You are certainly right that there are some things we don't know. You just haven't put it strongly enough, you cuddly little puddin', you. There are many, many things that we don't know and the history of cosmology is one not of greater understanding but of new discoveries simply giving rise to further and yet further questions and the realisation that the mysteries and complexities of the universe are greater than ever hitherto imagined. Newton was a great genius -- one of the two greatest scientists of all time -- but how mundane and boring is Newtonian physics compared to the beauty and complexity of Einstein's and the wonders of quantum mechanics and modern discoveries in cosmolgy.

And of course there must be many things that we are unaware of and that we don't know exist. That is the basic premise of science, you silly little
apricot -- that there are many things that we don't know or understand. That is what science, or more accurately the scientific method, is all about. It's a method of inquiry into the unknown; but a method based on reason, experiment, and intelligence -- not emotion, prejudice and wishful thinking.
