I'm a six day literal creationist, no worries there(so Papist I see your beginning to gather I'm at the very least a believer ) . The author of the text is to interpet himself. When I write a metaphor, I give obvious clues that what I have written is not a literal event. Just like Jesus' telling of parables, although the author doesn't explicitly state that these events were not real events you would assume by the style of writing that the stories Jesus' tells are allegorical by nature.

So how do you know God wasn't being metaphorical and a day wasn't really 24 hours long but is a metaphor for an epoch or some such?

You start all this metaphor nonsense and before you know it you're saying the Earth moves round the sun and all sorts of nonsense like we evolved from monkeys.

Jesus quite specifically states when it's a parable so we are in no doubt. Or was He only joking when He drove out demons?
