I thought it might be nice to have a friendly little discussion about this mysterious and powerful symbol.
666 sucks sucks sucks
With its devilish "666" date-stamp, today should be hell, but if you crunch the numbers it's apparently more about hugs than human sacrifice.
For those of an apocalyptic bent, the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year is the ideal date for an anti-Christ with a sense of occasion to get busy with the brimstone.
Other scary creatures have also seized upon the date - the producers of The Omen, a remake of the horror film about demon child Damien, have chosen today for its release.
Bookmakers are on board, with an online outfit offering 100,000 to 1 odds the world will end on "Apocalypse Tuesday", although it admits winners could have some difficulty collecting.
And, in a goat's horn-in-the-eye for Christians and their National Day of Prayer, US thrash-metal fans have demonically declared June 6, 2006 as the "National Day of Slayer".
The hype surrounding triple-six began back with a quote in The Book of Revelations, and the number's been associated with the devil ever since.
The quote is:
But despite dire warnings from the Bible, conspiracy theorists and Iron Maiden about the beastly nature of "666", to numerologists it's really a rather jolly number.
After some elementary sums - no calculator required - Helen Backman from The Argyle Oracle psychic centre in Sydney says there's nothing at all sinister about today's date:
"There's nothing to be worried about - if you just take the number six, it's the number of relationships, harmony and building bridges," she said. Six is about the energy of co-operation, love and beauty. Then if you add six, six and six, you get 18, which then adds up to nine. Nine is the most spiritual number - it contains the energy of all the other numbers. So there's nothing to be afraid of - nine is the number of the soul and there's nothing in any way that's sinister about it. In a supreme show of numerical confidence, Ms Backman has even let her very own Damien leave the house.

''Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of his name.
"This calls for wisdom: let anyone with the understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person.
"Its number is six hundred and sixty-six."
