Well the Gospel writers wanted to write the best and most Godly inspired draft that they could. They couldn't simply scrawl out some missive and pass it along.

Some bloke performing miracles, rising from the dead, you would think someone at the time would have noticed and made a note of it, but no one did, plenty is known about Herod Agrippa, and Pontius Pilate, they must have made more of an impression at the time.
