Re: True Christian™ Mom Reviews Movies

This will be such a good way to teach the kids about the Bible! The young children haven't learned self-control, so they can't sit still for the lectures and Sunday School at my house. This will be a good way to motivate them to behave, and their little sinful nature will see something fun and cause them to behave. And then, they'll go to something that will instill the fear of the Lord in them. Glory!

Oh, I'm sure it is going to be a great movie, because it will have an almost all-white cast! (The slave roles are reserved for darkies).

And for a great reason, too:

I would highly recommend this astounding film by director Gareth Edwards, featuring the Leviathan:

I might write a review of the sci-fi film SnowPiercer.

I'm kind of a train geek, when it comes to ways to improve public transit. This movie has so many great ideas that I just don't know where to start.

            Exodus: Gods and Kings

A controversial film about the Biblical hero Moses, receiver of the Law (Exodus 31:18), military conqueror with special perks (Numbers 31:18), and as portrayed by this film, deliverer of the Jews. The story takes its cue from the epic event in which the LORD smote the Egyptians for having dared enslaved the Hebrews as part of His Divine Plan 400 years earlier (Genesis 15:13). We get treated to the wrath of God in Hollywood style - through lots of explosions! One is expected to suspend their disbelief due to the many factual errors here, including massive explosions preceding the invention of gunpowder, Moses' age, the miracles shown as natural events, and the idea that Jews can fight guerrilla warfare when we all know the most a Jew can do is fight through usury.

The director makes it easy to know which members out of a cast of thousands are important to pay attention to. They are the white actors in key roles, representing Middle Eastern and African characters. The pale skin tones (bronzer is helpfully applied) and haphazard mix of American and British accents is a comforting aspect when facing the possibility of watching 150 minutes of otherwise scary, dark skinned people. Watching dark skinned people fighting each other in the desert would naturally trigger any God-fearing white woman, but this was not so scary at all.

            Things to watch for:

The director's lack of faith is evident in his portrayal of the story. From portraying God as a little boy, to crocodiles eating people given as the reason for the Nile River turning to blood, director Ridley Scott is wrestling with his own demons. He fails to understand the Sovereignty of the LORD, and instead treats these events as increasingly suspicious coincidences. That's why, for example, he neglected to show the Jews celebrating the violent and terrifying death of the Egyptian army and nation as a whole (Exodus 15:20-21). True Christians™ know these events happened exactly as told, as do the Egyptians who are suing the nation of Israel for damages. I would pray for the director, who suggested religion is "the biggest source of evil," but any man who could immerse himself in the history of God's Glory and yet remain hardhearted is clearly asking for eternal damnation. He can commiserate with the Egyptian pharaoh when he meets him in Hell.

Things to talk about with your children:

God's mercy in this story is presented in a visual manner. This is helpful for the younger children, although not nearly as helpful as a child's imagination as she waits for sleep to come in the quiet of night, knowing that the other side of the coin of God's Mercy is God's Justice, and He sees everything (Hebrews 4:13).

Regardless of the director's ineptitude, God uses this movie to show His Justice through His mercy. Children should note that God doesn't kill Ramses for his disobedience, he mercifully gives Ramses time to think about it. In the mean time, God helps Ramses see the importance of compliance by continuing to murder random people until Ramses embraces the prudent choice to comply. Children should note that God can outlast their stubbornness, too. Ramses was stubborn until his child was executed and sent off to Hell (where he is still suffering today, to the Glory of God). Children should realize that God will take whatever is most special to them until they choose to comply as well, and He's not afraid to send naughty children to Hell.

I give this movie four stars!

              Risen

The first forty days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is told through the eyes of Clavius, a Roman Centurion charged by Pontius Pilate to investigate rumors of a risen Jewish Messiah. Clavius is commanded "to find the body, dispel rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem," according to a press release. And so begins the Greatest Detective Story Every Told.

As our Roman Centurion interviews the Apostles and other historic Biblical characters, he bears witness to the legendary and miraculously true events that followed the Resurrection. As the situation becomes more and more urgent, our Centurion becomes deeply affected by his investigation and his doubts are cast into doubt. He cannot deny what he's witnessed, or rather, what others tell him they had witnessed. So his witness is really like second hand witness, but that's okay because Jesus wins in the end.

When Jesus (they call Him by the Jewish version "Yeshua" throughout the movie) rejoins his 11 disciples, we get to imagine Clavius unofficially welcomed into their ranks. While this may be mere speculation historically, it's a grand gesture to the non-Christians out there to imagine themselves in his place. It's like extending an olive branch that has written on it, "You too can join Me if you hear people talk about My incredible adventures and believe them anyway!"

              Things to watch for:

Studies show 90-95% of modern atheists reject God for emotional reasons, not scientific, historical, or logical. They do so because they want to rationalize their sin and still sleep peacefully when they lay their heads down at the end of the day. Atheists hate guilt and will do anything to avoid it. Watch for the emotional elements in the story. It's not difficult as they outweigh by far any factual elements.

Things to talk about with your children:

History is hard. It's a confusing subject. Some people say one thing is true, others argue against it. We weren't there, so we can never really know. Evidence is only as good as the person who interprets it, and people are fallible anyway. For this reason, Jesus talks to our hearts, not our heads. Our heads get confused and that's why Jesus loves those who don't think too hard, those who simply let Him be the boss (Proverbs 3:5).

I give this movie four stars!

(I couldn't stand hearing "Yeshua" one more time! AAAARRRGGGHHH! So annoying!)
