1Tm:5:17: Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
1Tm:5:18: For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
I’ve been rather busy recently preaching the word and then fighting a court battle over preaching the word.
There is some irony in being invited to speak to a gathering and then their getting upset when you do. I see it in much the same way as a woman who goes out to buy a coat, buys a red one and then, when she’s home, she decides that she wanted the green one. The whole episode is entirely of her making and nothing to do with the shop owner. Now we can expect this sort of irrational behavior from women, but when the Farfield Business Association makes a decision, you hardly expect that they will change their mind. Businessmen stick to their deals.
Anyway – to the point.
The Pastors at Landover have in their contract a clause appointing Pastor Zeke as their agent, and so it was that I was scheduled to speak to the Farfield Business Association for a fee (I was to receive 75% of whatever Pastor Zeke told me the fee was, which is very generous of him seeing how much work he puts in.) The idea was they would benefit from a true reading of the Scriptures and application of God’s Word.
At the venue, they had mounted a pulpit on a dais, so I strode up, viewed my congregation and asked, “Do you know what I am going to say?” To my astonishment they replied that they didn’t!
I told them that I had no desire to speak to people who didn't even know what I was talking about and left.
Apparently, there was some decent Christian embarrassment left in the Farfield Business Association and later that evening, Zeke told me that they were sorry and that they wanted me back the next evening.
Again I mounted the pulpit and asked the same question. This time they all shouted “Yes!” To be frank, I was quite amazed and announced that as they already knew what I was going to say, I wouldn’t waste any more of their valuable time and left.
When I got back to Landover, Zeke was most annoyed at the disrespectful way that the Farfield Business Association had behaved. He went so far to say that he expected more of people who were supposed to be secular leaders. He asked me to try one more time.
Once again I asked the same question – “Do you know what I am going to say?”
The deceptiveness of the Farfield Business Association can be judged by the fact that there must have been collusion because half of them answered "yes" and the other half said "no". So I said "Then the half who know what I am going to say should tell the other half", and left.
Zeke billed them for three visits (He was generous enough to give the “block-booking discount of 5%) and the heathens refused to pay!
Fortunately, the Landover speakers’ contract insists that all disputes must be resolved in Landover’s court, and so the matter was resolved in Landover’s favour plus costs, plus expenses, etc.
The Law is “Lu:9:5: And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
