'Harry Potter' rapist jailed'

A fancy dress rapist decked out as Harry Potter was today jailed for seven and a half years for attacking a 13-year-old girl with learning disabilities. Alexander Meyer, 25, spent the day before the rape viewing child porn on his computer. And on 4 July this year he travelled from his home in Church Road, Sandford on Thames, Oxfordshire, to a fancy dress weekend festival at his former home town of Llanidloes, Powys. Meyer, a catalogue telephone worker, was dressed bizarrely in a red dressing gown, slippers and glasses when he swooped on the victim after she lost her friends in the town.
Shortly before 10pm the girl outside a kebab shop searching for her friends. "It was her misfortune to come across Alexander Meyer," said Rhys Rowlands, prosecuting at Mold Crown Court today. "She explained she had lost her friends and the defendant offered to help her. She believed what he had said. He walked her through town to a local church yard where he took her hand and pulled her up some steps." The paedophile then threatened to kill the girl - claiming he had a knife and would press it against her throat if she made a sound.
He ordered her to undress which she refused to do, telling him she was only 13. "She said she didn't have a clue what he was doing to her," said Mr Rowlands. Meyer indecently assaulted the girl but was disturbed by a couple walking nearby. "He placed his hand over her mouth to prevent her from shouting out and caused her difficulty breathing," said Mr Rowlands.
The defendant apologised to the girl but continued the attack - moving her to a shed where he sexually assaulted her.
Mr Rowlands said: "This was clearly an appalling ordeal he subjected her to. It was a sustained attack - she was with him in all for about 30 minutes."
The victim's worried father was phoning her during the attack but Meyer switched off the mobile and only returned it to her when she promised not to tell anyone what happened.
Meyer was arrested the next day and he refused to answer detectives' questions.
His laptop was studied and contained 44 still images and three films of child abuse. Despite pleading guilty to sexual activity with a child and rape, he told a pre-sentencing report author the girl was dressed provocatively. Police said she was dressed like a normal teenager.
Meyer also admitted eight counts of possessing indecent images of children.
The teenager's mother told police: "This has been every mother's worst nightmare. My daughter's life has been effectively wrecked. She is frightened to leave the house, she can't play with her friends. She suffers from flashbacks and has been referred for counselling. It has also interfered with her schooling."
Mr Rowlands said wicked rumours about the teenager encouraging Meyer "could not be further from the truth". Duncan Bould, defending, said his client was truly remorseful and that his life had changed in 2006 when his mother was killed in a crash near Wrexham when horses ran in a road.
He said: "He doesn't seek to place any matter before the court which might be regarded as an excuse for what he has done."
Judge Merfyn Hughes QC, sentencing Meyer, who has no previous convictions, said: "This is a sad and distressing case. "From an early age the girl is someone who has suffered from a significant learning disability.
She was a girl lacking in confidence, shy and vulnerable to predatory adults such as yourself. The evening in question should have been a pleasant one for her - she had only just turned 13."
He added: "The full extent of the psychological harm you inflicted on her will not be known for many years but it is likely to be extremely serious.
"She is entirely innocent. It is recognised you accept responsibility for the offence but your insight remains limited. You minimise the offence by saying she was wearing provocative clothing."
When he is released Meyer will be disqualified from working with children and on licence indefinitely.
