And my presses are bursting with the sweet wine of material and the love God can only provide. So I have given 30% to my church allowing my minister to buy many earthly luxuries which sister Betty Bowers (America's Best Christian) testifies is a sign of God's love.

But is the 30% enough? Perhaps I should give even more? I ask for your good Christian advise.

Tithing should be 30% for the wealthy. That's 30% of your GROSS, not net income. Lots of folks try and jip Jesus like that, but He sees through such subterfuge.

If you're poor, Jesus says you're supposed to give everything you own.

Mark 12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. Mark 12:42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. Mark 12:43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: Mark 12:44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Of course you should give more than the minimum. Anything above that is called a "Love Offering." Jesus loves those.

A few days back, I was reminded of this old tale.

As he was visiting his parishioners one Saturday afternoon, a new pastor stopped at one house and found that no one answered the door. It was clear that someone was home, but he knocked repeatedly and no one appeared. Finally he pulled out his card, wrote “Revelation 3:20” on the back, and left it in the door.

That Sunday he found the card in the collection basket. Below his message someone had written “Genesis 3:10.”

Revelation 3:20 reads, “Behold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.”

Genesis 3:10 reads, “And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked.”

Back in ’62, when I was doing more preaching than research, I had a similar experience. I called at the house of the late Patience Davidson. There was a purpose to the visit; her tithing had been erratic, due, it was said to her illness.

The note I left said, “Malachi 3:8”

To which the reply came, “Lu:21:3:” Well, that was basically untrue and a disgusting warping of Jesus’ Word. She was evicted 3 days later and shunned from the congregation. She seemed to lose all perspective after this and became a nuisance. As a punishment from God, her lifeless body was found hanging off the parapet of the Old Bridge.

Malachi 3:8 reads “Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes & offerings.”

Lu:21:3: reads, “And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:”

Can I therefore remind you all that tithing is not an option.
