I gave up on rechargeable batteries. They wouldn't stay charged for long, and they didn't have much power. I just buy Duracells when they go on sale.

I think that's a false economy; buy a reputable brand of rechargeable - I like Sony they seem markedly better although I haven't done any controlled measurements with them. All batteries have a shelf life, Duracells only go on sale when their expiry day is near.

I'm also worried about buying rechargeable batteries and having them blow up on me. They use chemicals, and they can be dangerous.

I've never had a problem with Duracells. I believe in them. They are the best battery made, hands down. I've seen other batteries fail, but never a Duracell.

They just put those dates on them to get people to throw out perfectly good cells. Just like the expiration dates on medicines. They're still good after the date printed on the bottle.

Interesting - I use re-chargeable ones. I find that the power discharge characteristics are superior to ordinary ones. Charging usually only takes an hour at the most and they hold the charge well.

I have a little plastic case to carry them in. When one set is discharged, I return them to the case BUT the other way round, so I know they need charging when I get home.

OK, they do wear out eventually, but they are good for at least 1000 charges and they give you fair warning that they are dying.

I have to side with you on this one Brother Bathfire. I have had several Maglite flashlights completely ruined by using Alkaline batteries in them. It is the result of the batteries leaking. Alkaline batteries contain potassium hydroxide, which results in a violent exothermic reaction with aluminum (which Maglites are made with).

Here is a demonstration of the reaction (using aluminum powder) in a high school chemistry class.

The students keep wondering what the gas being given off is and keep getting it wrong (obviously this is a LIEbral public school where they never learn anything). The correct answer is hydrogen.

2Al(solid) + 6H2O + 2KOH ---> 2K(Al(OH)4) + 3H2 (gas)

If your flashlight (or other device where an Alkaline battery is used) is only slightly damaged by battery leakage you may be able to rescue it by cleaning the damaged areas with a mild acid (as opposed to baking soda used on car batteries) such as vinegar or a product like Lime-A-Way that is used to clean lime, calcium and rust stains. Be sure to thoroughly rinse it with water before you attempt to use it again.

The myths about rechargeable batteries have largely been dispelled with the introduction of the nickel metal hydride rechargeables. The latest ones have capacities of 2400mah (AA's) and are equal to or better than Alkalines. They tend to self discharge over time because of their low internal resistance, but periodic recharging solves this minor inconvenience. The only batteries that have been known to blow up are the Li-Ion batteries used in cell-phones and laptops.

I'm a little upset. I was reading up on flashlights and learned that they are part of a sinister sexual agenda. It should have been obvious to me, considering the size and shape of the Maglite, but now I know a lot more about the perverted appeal of these phallic objects.

It just goes to show that people will collect and idolize anything. I wonder when the first "I love my flashlight, and I want to marry it" rally cry will be heard from the flashlight fanatics? Will they insist on equal rights?

I think these limp-wristed flashlight collectors are really just nerds who want to be Luke Skywalker. Until they are able to actually buy a light saber, flashlights will just have to do.

The Zoo uses the rechargeable Maglites. They don't think that we're smarter than the monkeys and don't trust us to handle batteries. The Light sits in a cradle for recharging. Fortunately you don't get shocked if you touch the charge points, although we do have a flashlight that's combined with a shock taser, but that's only for use on unruly humans, in the case of a riot or hostage situation.

All flashlights are checked at the end of each shift. It's especially important not to leave them in the primate cages.

I've been considering all this information about flashlights and I've decided that it might be a good idea to have all True Christian junior camp members submit their flashlight before bedtime each night for safe keeping to their counselor to prevent unwanted explorations.

Man accused of using flashlight in sex assault


ELYRIA — A Lorain man has been indicted by a county grand jury for his role in a home invasion in which he and another man allegedly sexually assaulted a woman and beat her husband.

County Prosecutor Dennis Will said George Houle, 26, and another man knocked on the door of the Lorain couple’s home shortly after midnight on July 27 and forced their way inside. The homeowner, Will said, was beaten and tied up. Houle and his accomplice — whose arrest status was unavailable Thursday — then tied up the woman and sexually assaulted her with a flashlight.

Houle and his accomplice stole electronics, jewelry and some cash from the house but didn’t disturb the couple’s 2-year-old and infant children, who were sleeping at the time, Will said. Houle is charged with two counts each of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and felonious assault and three counts of rape.

They type of flashlight wasn't mentioned, but I'm hoping it's not the same model as my new Maglite. I don't want to have to think about that when I'm checking under the house or whatever.
