  • Ask a sensible atheist :)

    Hello forum.

While browsing for some religious images I happened to stumble upon your website and felt it would be interesting to join and participate.

I happen to be what you would refer to as an atheist, meaning having no belief in anything supernatural, neither ghosts nor gods.

I do however have a great interest in anything regarding people and culture, not mention the psychology of humans and how the world, and the universe, works. I have no scientific education but I enjoy studying it in my spare time.

When you have grown up in a certain environment and maybe acquired a certain set of beliefs, or values, it can be tremendously hard to understand how other people can hold other beliefs. Yet I believe we can all agree that if you teach a child something, he will grow up to think of it as normal. Muslims kneel towards Mekka 6 times a day simply because it is normal for them, even though you (and I) look at it and frown.

So since there is now an atheist sitting around here, feel free to ask him anything. If you wonder how one becomes an atheist, how I view the world, how I explain (or am unable to explain) the great riddles of our lives and existence.

And if you happen to be completely uninterested, make sure you have a great day and get to make up for the time I wasted.

    Ok friend;

Since you know God exists why do you deny him by pretending to be an unbeliever?.

Time to reclaim our FREEDOM from the “Mullah in Chief” and his growing activist voter hoards of socialists, communists, anti-Semites, anti-Christians, atheists, radical gays and lesbians, feminists, illegal immigrants, Muslims, anti-Anglo whites and others.

So you think that you can convince us to give up God? Why do you want to drag people to Hell with you?

I happen to be what you would refer to as an atheist, meaning having no belief in anything supernatural, neither ghosts nor gods.
So would you consider someone who doesn't believe in God but does believe in ghosts an atheist? What about someone who believes that we were put here by aliens?

I do however have a great interest in anything regarding people and culture, not mention the psychology of humans and how the world, and the universe, works. I have no scientific education but I enjoy studying it in my spare time.
Well I will admit it's refreshing to have someone come here claiming their an atheist that isn't also claiming to be a tenured professor at Oxford or some other garbage.

You will discover that very few of us actually grew up in a sheltered fundamental family. Both my husband and I grew up in liebral Christian homes, he was even raised in a United church, and I Presbyterian. However these churches did not answer our questions and were unable to rationalized to either of us why some parts of the Bible don't mean what they say they mean.

We get atheists here every day. I will again thank you for being polite, most that come here are angry little trolls. I've always assumed that they're demon infested and that it's the demons that make them react so violently towards us.

Interesting phrasing, there is a word for that, I can't think of it right now, but there is a linguistic term for asking a question and presupposing a condition to be true or false, and thereby making it impossible to answer the question directly without accepting that.

Kinda like if I would ask you "When you are at your summer cottage on the surface of the moon, do you do your own cooking or do you dine out all the time?".

The way I view the world, the existence of any god seems as unlikely as you having a summer cottage on the moon. Slightly more unlikely actually, though I cannot prove any of these conditions to be untrue. Then again, I can't prove the world is not flat either, but the evidence for the earth being round is so enormous that we all accept it as fact. I suppose you do too.

Don't try to fool me with your semantics, boy. How many other Christian forums are you spamming with your Jesus-hating BS?

            Re: Ask a sensible atheist

I have a couple of questions for you: What makes you think that you're "sensible?" Atheists lack any sense or morality, because you all hate Jesus.

Did satan send you here to try and win souls over for his side?
            Who Will Jesus Damn?

Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:

Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)

Were not talking about the existence of a house on the moon. We are talking about the existence of God. Well all have personal experience of Him (that voice in our heads) and clearly something out of this world wrote The Bible since it follows no human sense of logic.

                Re: Ask a sensible atheist

I am having trouble getting the quotes sorted out, I hope this post is not too shabby.

"So you think that you can convince us to give up God? Why do you want to drag people to Hell with you?"

To be honest, I don't think I am able to do that by posting on a forum. I don't type to change the world, I type because I enjoy discussion and I am curious about people and the world. I have met many christians around the world who have marketed their beliefs, and had interesting discussions with sometimes intersting persons. I doubt any of them are now atheists, but at least we had fun sharing opinions.

I suppose the second question was rhetorical....

"So would you consider someone who doesn't believe in God but does believe in ghosts an atheist? What about someone who believes that we were put here by aliens? "

                +1

I was using the word in a sloppy way, my bad. Of course one who believes her late husband is still walking around their home can be an atheist.

"You will discover that very few of us actually grew up in a sheltered fundamental family. Both my husband and I grew up in liebral Christian homes, he was even raised in a United church, and I Presbyterian. However these churches did not answer our questions and were unable to rationalized to either of us why some parts of the Bible don't mean what they say they mean. "

A child will learn what it is taught, they do by no means have to grow up in a typically "fundamental" family just to adopt the beliefs of their parents, they will in most cases do that anyway. You and your husband did not grow up in a fundamental environment, and still you have the beliefs your parents had.

"We get atheists here every day. I will again thank you for being polite, most that come here are angry little trolls. I've always assumed that they're demon infested and that it's the demons that make them react so violently towards us. "

I did not know I had company, I just jumped straight into the pool.

I try to not be insulting or personal, though I reserve the right to be clever and witty from time to time, I only came here today, and I have already suggested to a person who did not understand gravity that he could verify its existence by jumping out of a window.

Most people probably do consider themselves sensible for their own reasons. The reason I do it is because I spend a lot of time and energy searching for truth about various things. this may be a truth about how the atmosphere moves, or whether a certain brand of detergent is good or bad.

I loved reading as a kid, and devoured knowledge, a lot of it completely useless. I don't know why, but I always had a tendency to be sceptical about statements that seemed illogical or implausible, and even if I believed something to be untrue, I did not settle for that, but tried to look into it and find out if it really was how I thought it was.

I grew long hair once. A friend told me that I should trim the edges, and it would grow faster. This seemed strange to me, since there are no nerves in hairs to signal to the body to grow it faster? I read about it, and of course it is a myth.

I read, and heard that one should not bathe for 3 hours after a meal, you would get cramps and drown. This seemed ridiculous to me, even though I was as young as 13. I looked into it, and it turned out to be a myth.

I believe I was 7, because I was in school. A friend told me that he thought the tooth fairy didnt exist. I was appalled, but asked him to tell me why he thought that, and he told me he found 10 small coins instead of a big coin under his pillow, so he thought it must be his parents who put the money there. I was amazed with this new knowledge and confronted my mom with it. I always liked being proven wrong, because it was always interesting.

As for a sense of morality, I do have it, thank you very much. Things like the value of a human life, respect, decency, the difference between right and wrong, all these things are so natural that I don't even need to think about it.

The statement "atheists have no sense of morality" needs to be founded with facts, it is a rather ridiculous statement. And as for Jesus, the historical figure which I choose to believe have existed, I personally have nothing bad to say about him. From what he knew at the time he lived, he made good decisions, and he was a great humanist. Of course you must consider that I, personally, view him as just another normal person who happened to preach something at the time, and nothing more.

                  The second question was rhetorical?

Well not really, I don't understand why if you don't believe in God you have to push your non belief on us.

I was using the word in a sloppy way, my bad. Of course one who believes her late husband is still walking around their home can be an atheist.
Well you didn't answer my question about the aliens. Also what if she believes that her husband is actively helping her in her daily life? Where do you draw the line? Or is it only the Christian God that you hate?

Well with detergent, I use three different brands for different uses, so there isn't "one True detergent". Have you read the KJV Bible? You will find the absolute Truth within its pages.

I was the same way as a child, that's what drove me away from the fuzzy bunny churches. Nowhere does God say that the Old Testament is out of date, nowhere does it say that Jesus was a peace loving hippie. Yet these are the lies that false christians hear every day.

I grew long hair once. A friend told me that I should trim the edges, and it would grow faster. This seemed strange to me, since there are no nerves in hairs to signal to the body to grow it faster? I read about it, and of course it is a myth.
So you put more faith into a book than your friend? How do you know that it is really a myth? The only way to know for sure would to be cut half your hair and measure in three months time.

I read, and heard that one should not bathe for 3 hours after a meal, you would get cramps and drown. This seemed ridiculous to me, even though I was as young as 13. I looked into it, and it turned out to be a myth.
Uh, that's swimming, not bathing and it's one hour. I don't think anyone over 3 feet tall can drown in a bathtub unless there is something wrong with them.

I believe I was 7, because I was in school. A friend told me that he thought the tooth fairy didnt exist. I'm sorry your parents lied to you.

Hmmm...... So what is the value of human life? The words that you have given us are very vague. Do you respect everyone? What about child molesters? What exactly is decency? right and wrong? Ever heard the saying what's right for the fox is wrong for the goose? God has given us very specific rules about what is right and what is wrong, so at least we base ours on something tangible. Your "right and wrong" could change with as little as what mood you're in.

The statement "atheists have no sense of morality" needs to be founded with facts, it is a rather ridiculous statement.
Not really, what do you base your morality on? What feels good? What right do you have to say something is wrong? What if an atheist is a child molester? In his mind he's doing what's right.

And as for Jesus, the historical figure which I choose to believe have existed, I personally have nothing bad to say about him. The miracles? What about when he flogged the money changers in the temple? What about when he called the Sumerian woman a dog? What about when he said that the OT laws were all still in effect? You may want to read this.

                    The second question was rhetorical?
Why do you refuse to answer that question?

To a hateful atheist, there is no difference between the tooth fairy, Jesus and santa claus. That's how depraved they are.

                          Re: Ask a sensible atheist

"Marketed their beliefs? Are you saying that our beliefs are for sale? "

You are marking words aggressively. Of course the correct wording would be PROMOTING their religion. That question is pointless, of course they did not try to sell the right to believe something.

"Well not really, I don't understand why if you don't believe in God you have to push your non belief on us. "

As said before, I enjoy discussion. Would you prefer me not being here?

"Well you didn't answer my question about the aliens. Also what if she believes that her husband is actively helping her in her daily life? Where do you draw the line? Or is it only the Christian God that you hate? "

Well, it only takes a second to find out the actual meaning of an actual word. A "theist" believes in a supernatural entity that has an active part in creation and governing of the world. Muslims and christians are theists, the old greeks were too. Atheist means simply not believing in that. In your particular example one could maybe call her a theist. I don't know if I personally would, but I think it is not terribly important, although it is certainly open for discussion.

"Well I know for a fact that my parents did not share my beliefs. They were Sunday go to church type christians. My mother died in sin and is now burning in Hell, I praise God though that my father has turned more towards God now that he is older. If I had the beliefs that I was raised with, I would believe that God was something that you turned to when life got bad and ignored the rest of the time. "

Firstly I must say I am sorry that you live believing that your mother burns in hell. I think you would be better off believing otherwise, but your faith is your faith.

And my point is that you have a christian belief, as did your parents, you got the belief from your parents, although there are many sets of christian beliefs and most will end up developing a personal one. If you had been born in China, you would have another belief, and if you were born in India, you would have another belief.

Do you consider my posts here an "attack" or as a person voicing his own opinions?

Boy, your unsaved opinions aren't worth a bucket of spit to Jesus. He wants us to obey Him, not think for ourselves.

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? - Matthew 6:25

No such thing as a sensible atheist. They are heathens who pretend God isn't real and they think they won't go to hell if they think God isn't real. We all know they can and will because the Bible tells us otherwise.
