Looking at this from the other direction- why does no-one in this forum put any weight at all on the men? You all say that the only things women are capable of is staying at home looking after her husband, but then when it comes to rape suddenly the woman in question is some kind of vile devil tempting honest hard-working men into having sex with them. It is literally such a ridiculous, neolithic view that I want to fly over and knock some sense into you. I want to know how your mother let you be bought up like this

What's this word "neolithic" that you use? Does the Bible use this term? The Bible is "monotheist" in its perspective, and nothing in its pages is "ridiculous" as in being merely dismissed as a joke.

Dismissing the Bible as a joke is foolish and kind of sadistic, if you ask me. Do you think that Jesus' suffering on the cross is a joke? Or do think that God's commandment that a man should pay a father the appropriate price after forcibly taking the father's daughter's virginity is a joke? God doesn't kid around when it comes to protecting a man's property rights. Don't you feel anything for the father's position in such situations?

Social order as we know it would fall apart if people started just laughing at the Bible instead of using it to direct their actions. Do YOU want to live in a world where the Bible is NOT the be all standard for righteousness?!

Stop threatening to "knock some sense" into the only people in the world who want to take following the Bible to its logical conclusion.

This forum, Sparky, is based on clear-eyed, uncompromising logic.

It is your own, self-deluded abilty to rationalize that is keeping you for seeing this.

Deuteronomy 22:23-24 Makes God's position very clear:

"If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city and lie with her;

Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones until they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbor's wife. . ."

As I mentioned before, God is very concerned on the issue of property rights. That line about "humbling" the neighbor's wife doesn't really indicate that God is concerned with the damsel/wife's feelings of self-worth here; because she's being stoned to death. The point is that the neighbor -- in this case, the man who was expecting a virgin bride -- has been humbled and denied the purity of his bride so that he could be certain that the resulting offspring were his and no one else's and thus his property could be passed down with confidence.

Over and over throughout God's Holy Word He wisely makes provision for these sorts of eventualities. God knows that any girl who gets "forced" in the city asked for it. All she had to do was cry out and someone would have helped. If she didn't cry out-- she's culpable.

God is not stupid; He knows that a girl in the country can't count on nearby rescuers, so He lets her off the hook.

It's very simple, and very logical-- If you read the whole Bible.

But hey, if you want to belong to the whole "thinking-for-yourself" crew and ask questions about whether or not a girl's attacker might cover her mouth to prevent her from screaming, go ahead-- risk going to hell for questioning God's Word.

The Christians I know have read Deuteronomy and respect its authority.

Maybe you know some folks who prefer "Bible-lite" because it's got one third fewer requirements for following the Lord and it goes down easier than the "hard" stuff.

And getting back to the logic argument-- there is absolutely nothing logical about insisting that you follow a holy text because it was given to you by your deity and then turning around and deciding that you can ignore that parts you don't like and assuming the your deity is "okay" with that.

Clearly God didn't account for background noise in the city, or the fact that the attacker might be armed? Or covering the girl's mouth, as you suggested.
