It's actually pretty common for them to invite as many as they can to a barmitzvah in order to teach their children how to grub money. It's as if at the age of 13 they're teaching their children how to start screwing using the gentiles.

If you don't go, they start the Jewish mother guilt trip on you. I've been invited to more than one where I didn't even know the kid. But they always want that cash gift from you.
